VRetreats unveils Palazzo Artemide

VRetreats has unveiled Palazzo Artemide, a historic hotel located in Ortigia, Sicily that has undergone an extensive reimagining.

The hotel is housed in a 19th-century building and overlooks Piazza Minerva on the island of Ortigia, in the historic centre of Syracuse. Palazzo Artemide now features 40 elegantly-furnished rooms, including three suites and six junior suites, as well as completely refreshed public spaces.

The renovations have modernised the property while preserving its authentic character and strong Sicilian history. Palazzo Artemide showcases a multitude of global influences, reflecting the rich history of Syracuse and Sicily as a whole. The property’s architectural design pay homage to the original 1880s structure – Baroque flair and ornamentation complement the limestone and Doric columns of ancient Greece, while traditional secret gardens draw inspiration from Arabian architecture and the ‘dammuso’ archways elevate the authentic setting. The new name of the hotel is inspired by the Greek goddess, protector of the city of Syracuse.

The renovation has transformed the ground floor, enhancing the common areas to blend them with the outdoors, spilling onto Minerva Square. The new lighting system was installed to illuminate the ancient columns, arches and internal archways while preserving the ochre marble flooring. Additionally, doorways in rooms, which open on two sides with wide balconies, have been carefully renovated. Their decorative elements were reorganised with plaster frames and backgrounds, typical of local Sicilian architecture.

Amunì, the hotel’s new restaurant and cocktail bar, has been reimagined, inviting guests to experience the essence of Sicily through a menu reflecting the island’s rich traditions. The cocktail bar, complete with outdoor seating that extends across Minerva Square, allows guests to admire the Doric columns of the Temple of Athena while enjoying a cocktail.
