Viceroy expands Latin American presence

Los Angeles-based Viceroy Hotel Group has debuted its 15th property worldwide with the opening of Viceroy Los Cabos on the coast of Baja California, marking the latest addition to The Viceroy Icon Collection – a group of the brand’s most treasured properties.

Located in the heart of San José del Cabo, the project is the result of a collaboration with Mexican investment firm Rodina Group. Originally conceived by Mexican architect Miguel Angel Aragonés, and formally known as Mar Adentro, the 194-key hotel has re-emerged as a Viceroy property following a series of renovations and alterations. Featuring a design that embraces the natural beauty of water, Viceroy Los Cabos has been re-conceptualised to incorporate a beachfront pool and bar, a refreshed lobby and arrival experience, new dining venues, and a fitness centre curated by Los Angeles-based celebrity trainer Harley Pasternak.

“The much-anticipated opening of Viceroy Los Cabos marks an extremely monumental day for our brand,” says Bill Walshe, CEO of Viceroy Hotel Group. “I look forward to welcoming guests to this extraordinary resort as we endeavour to create inspiring adventures that will stay with them a lifetime. The resort stands out as provocative and sensational. It furthers Viceroy’s quest to deliver highly individual, modern luxury experiences in the world’s most sought-after destinations.”

Upon arrival through a sculpted iron entrance and artisan wooden door, guests are greeted by the sound of water. With a minimalist design re-envisioned by design firm Arquitectura de Interiores, Viceroy Los Cabos’ new lobby interiors have been transformed from stark white to feature a warm palette of blue and natural sand tones – all inspired by the meeting of the Los Cabos desert and sea. The bold façade marries white, black and beige, and gives way to a lobby adorned with handmade details, distinctive textures and art inspired by the local Mexican culture.

Amongst other renovations, Viceroy Los Cabos now features five reconstructed dining venues, each providing a local experience that seeks to reflect the history and culture of Baja. Nido Restaurant acts as both a visual centrepiece and social hub for guests and locals with its latticed, nest-like structure surrounded by elevated walkways that appear to float on water. With an international ceviche menu and handcrafted cocktails, Nido draws inspiration from Spain, Mexico, and Peru. Elsewhere, located in resort’s main building, Casero Restaurant and Otro Bar feature elevated home-style Mexican cuisine and a tequila library stocked with house infusions such as chilli and marigold, as well as craft coffee and specialty Mexican hot chocolate.

Viceroy Los Cabos’ beachside eatery Nidito, meanwhile, overlooks the new infinity beach pool and ocean beyond, whilst a rooftop bar will open later this year. With the opening, Viceroy Los Cabos has also debuted its ‘A Canvas for Discovery’ artist series, kicking off with Los Angeles-based contemporary artist Spencer Mar Guilburt, whilst further amenities include a cinema room and a number of meeting and event spaces.

Andres & Felipe Chico, Managing Partners at Rodina, comment: “As proud owners of Viceroy Los Cabos, we are thrilled to collaborate with Viceroy. This stunning and unique resort will elevate the already-impressive reputation Los Cabos has as the ultimate destination for sophisticated adventurers.”
