Twelve at Hengshan arrives in Shanghai’s most historic neighbourhood
Carefully incorporated within the low-rise heritage district, the five-storey rectangular building surrounding an internal garden is the result of collaboration between some of the world’s leading architects and designers.
Italian architect Mario Botta – whose iconic structures include the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art – created the contemporary courtyard building. The distinctive interiors are by New York-based cult hospitality design duo Yabu Pushelberg, who also designed the St Regis San Francisco and W New York Times Square.
The hotel’s design is a mixture of cultures and timelines which see Eastern opulence combined with contemporary furnishings. A soft, natural color palette and hand-painted Oriental screens, silk lanterns and latticework add a distinctive Oriental flourish.
Each of the guestrooms and the 338m² Presidential Suite feature large windows overlooking the peaceful secret garden at the heart of the hotel, or Shanghai’s vibrant cityscape. Garden motifs are carried into the guestrooms and the marble bathrooms feature deep-soaking tubs and Hermes bath products in the suites.
The hotel’s public areas include a restaurant featuring three open kitchens, a glass wine cellar, a 712m² spa with 14 double and single treatment rooms, a 24-hour 290m² fitness centre and 1,303m² of meeting space.
