Austria’s hotel market is forecast to keep growing steadily over the next few years, with Vienna getting the lion’s share of new developments in the country. Together with a number of trendy boutique properties, the city is also preparing to welcome international operators and their popular brands to its historic streets.
Tophotelprojects currently has 26 projects, totalling 4,233 rooms, listed in its database in planning or under construction. According to the data service, seven (27%) of those will be opening this year, ten (39%) are planned for 2023, four (15%) are on track for completion in 2024, and five (19%) remain in the TBA phase.
Of the forthcoming schemes, ten will be in the five-star sector while eleven fall into the four-star category. Amongst the properties in the pipeline is the conversion of a 19th century building on Petersplatz in the city’s Old Town, together with a mixed-use development featuring soothing interiors by Tara Bernerd & Partners.

Rosewood
Marking the brand’s first flag in the Austrian capital and fifth in Europe, Rosewood Vienna will be located within a 19th century building on Petersplatz in the Old Town. The property’s 99 guestrooms, 27 suites and 1,800ft2 Presidential Suite are set to feature modern interiors that complement the Belle Époque architecture, while dining options include a show kitchen, terrace, upscale brasserie and garden oasis.

Almanac Palais
As Almanac Hotels expands across Europe, the operator has plans to land in the Austrian capital later this year. Situated on Vienna’s Ringstrasse opposite the city park, the 111-key property is currently being completely renovated by DI Victor Löffler of SoL Architekten and boasts a 600m2 spa area. Interiors by Barcelona-based Jaime Beriestain Studio will echo their surrounds through contemporary architectural and lighting details.

Mandarin Oriental
Occupying the city’s former commercial law court, Mandarin Oriental Vienna will be set within District One’s Ringstrasse, close to several major attractions. Overseeing the design of the 151-key, Brisen Group-owned hotel, London-based studio Goddard Littlefair will draw from a prominent catalogue of original elements whilst installing a restaurant, bar and outdoor garden, along with a spa and 17 residences.

The Hoxton
The Hoxton's Vienna debut will be nestled in Stadtpark in a 1950s modernist building that was the former HQ of Austria’s Chamber of Commerce; its history will be reflected in the design, with Ennismore working to restore and reclaim original features of the building. The hotel will boast 196 guestrooms; a spacious lobby and coffee bar; a restaurant and terrace; rooftop bar and pool; and a chic basement speakeasy.

Thompson
Set for completion in 2024, the 148-room Thompson Vienna is to form part of a mixed-use development featuring cultural venues and a department store from German brand KaDeWe. Architects Oma and NMPB, as well as interior designers Tara Bernerd & Partners will bring the project to life, creating a modern, edgy scheme inspired by the architecture and distinctive characteristics of Austria’s capital.
