TMC Hospitality takes Drift to Santa Barbara
California-based operator TMC Hospitality is set to open Drift Santa Barbara this Autumn, marking the second boutique hotel under its Drift moniker.
In partnership with local architecture firm Anacapa, TMC paid special attention to ensuring that the traditional Italian Mediterranean architectural skin of the building – dating back to the 1920s – was carefully preserved and restored while imbuing the interiors with a bold, minimalist aesthetic. The combination of styles allows the 45-key property to honour the Drift brand’s roots and simultaneously maintain a strong local identity.
With floor-to-ceiling windows across the hotel, natural light and the coastal breeze bring to life raw materials such as oak, concrete and brass, together with opening up the spaces to the both the bustle of State Street and the views of the Santa Ynez Mountains. Artwork by locals like Will Adler and Anacapa Ceramics further tie Drift Santa Barbara to its regional heritage.
In celebration of California’s way of indoor-outdoor living, on-site F&B concepts Dawn and Dusk extend into the neighbourhood promenade, encouraging guests to get outside and explore the area after a coffee or cocktail. Dawn kicks off the day with house-baked treats and coffee from Good Citizen Coffee Co, sold in an airy space full of warm textiles, natural wood and bright white walls. In contrast, Dusk is a moody agave and tapas bar – outfitted with dark steel and raw wood – serving craft cocktails and seasonal takes on ceviche, aguachile and crudo.
