The Westin London City to open on the River Thames this September
Westin Hotels & Resorts is set to debut in the UK market this September with the opening of The Westin London City. Set on a riverfront location in the heart of the capital, the property has been designed by British architects and interior designers Dexter Moren Associates, whose fluid scheme features a modern residential aesthetic that reflects the hotel’s natural surroundings, an aspect intent of enhancing guests’ wellness.
Situated where the final piece of the Thames pathway will connect Embankment to the Tower of London – providing a direct link between the city and river and affording views towards Shakespeare’s Globe and the South Bank – the property is also set to echo this merge between urban landscape and aquatic serenity.
As such, the design draws inspiration from the locale as well as Westin’s biophilic ethos and six pillars of wellbeing: Sleep Well, Eat Well, Move Well, Feel Well, Work Well and Play Well – the result is a space that is open and airy whilst preserving an intimate atmosphere. Owing to its atrium-style design, the lobby area – aptly named The Haven – is flooded with natural light and features a bespoke art installation by Dutch paper artist Gentenaar Torley, which mirrors the riverside location, twirling and oscillating like underwater flora.
Spread across two floors, The Haven features floor-to-ceiling windows and a palette of earthy colours that evoke feelings of tranquillity, while furnishings take cues from Mother Nature and complement oak timber panelling, rich green hues, matte finishes and curved lines. Channelling modern elegance meanwhile, guestrooms and suites boast angled windows that afford views of the city beneath and are complete with Westin’s signature Heavenly Bed for maximum comfort. Rounding out the accommodation, the property’s nine apartments offer river-facing vistas and are furnished with stone greys, light oaks and forest greens.
Embodying the brand’s ‘Let’s Rise’ mantra, the hotel’s 370m² Heavenly Spa by Westin comprises a 12m indoor pool that has been positioned around the archaeological remains of the Huggin Hill Bathhouse below, once one of the principal public buildings of a Roman town. In keeping with its roots, the pool’s interiors take inspiration from the Roman remains and textured bath stone contrasts, with sleek dark metals that pay homage to the rich history with a modern twist. Located next to the spa, the WestinWorkout Fitness Studio is open 24/7 – enabling travellers to maintain their fitness routine – and kitted out with a range of equipment.
Elsewhere, dining options include riverside bar Hithe & Seek, which looks out onto the Tate Modern and beyond, and an all-day dining restaurant, Mosaic, which is carefully broken down into sections to retain an intimate feel. Located on the hotel’s fourth floor and set away from the other communal areas sat on the bridge across Upper Thames Street, the Westin Club has been designed to provide guests with an exclusive area for quiet contemplation. Drawing inspiration from St Paul’s and the Queenshithe dock – the only remaining Anglo Saxon dock in the world – the space pairs sleek cut timber and plush furnishings.
Allowing flexibility in function through simple and intuitive design details, the ballroom is a fluid space that can be tailored to host a range of events. Its five meeting rooms emulate the linear nature of The Haven’s design, introducing residential touches and natural textures, resulting in a collaborative working space that sparks creativity. At the Westin Club meanwhile, a smaller room can be used for more intimate meetings.
