Ian Schrager’s Edition Hotels has landed in Rome, with doors to the 91-room hotel now officially open. Positioned only a few steps from Via Veneto, the property embodies Italian flare in all its glory.
Built in the 1940s, the hotel’s building is a striking example of rationalist design, brought to life by architect Marcello Piacentini. Nods to the building’s heritage can be found throughout, including a central marble staircase, courtyards and the building’s original statues.
As with all Edition properties, the lobby is the social heart of the hotel. With dramatic 22ft-high ceilings and porous travertine floors and walls, the space is centred around two symmetrical seating arrangements, where white custom fabric sofas and coffee tables inspired by Manuel Coltri lie next to petrified wood side tables and standing lamps.
The new Edition’s guestrooms follow the design aesthetics that the brand is known for, adding in a pronounced Italian flare. Beds are custom designed in Canaletto light walnut wood, while Peperino stone and custom bedside tables sit alongside Italian artwork adorning the walls – all framed by expansive windows bringing the Italian tableau to life. In their bathrooms, guests will find a custom Carrara marble basin leaning on walnut wood, brushed brass fixtures, as well as the signature Edition Le Labo amenities.
Food and beverage offerings at The Rome Edition are led by Paola Colucci, whose signature restaurant Anima will serve traditional Italian dishes with a modern twist from an open-fronted kitchen.
Located on the ground floor are the hotel’s two bars: Punch Room and Jade Bar. Punch Room, Edition’s signature bar concept, is a speakeasy-inspired bar concept that puts a modern spin on traditional beverages. The dark walnut wood bar, accompanied by a Rosso Levanto marble fireplace and custom armchairs in rosewood and dark brown leather, is a place where guests can unwind and examine the influence of the Roman Empire through drinks.
Jade Bar is an intimate mixology destination, a jewel box-like space with floor-to-ceiling green antique marble alongside accents of satin brass and gold. Here, guests are encouraged to relax on emerald velvet banquettes and take in the Jeff Koons-inspired sculptural pieces.
Up on the seventh floor, The Roof offers unobstructed views across the city skyline, featuring a large bar area, a travertine plunge pool haloed by daybeds in solid oiled teak, as well as custom bronze metal vases dotted along the outside edge of the terrace.
In a first for the city, the hotel has an expansive garden that will act as both piazza and dining space, featuring more than 400 plants. A dramatic bronze metal awning overlooks teak wood banquettes and free-standing furniture along with an Italianate arrangement of lanterns to give the space the feel of a traditional Roman garden. The Garden provides outdoor seating for Anima on one side and a relaxed all-day terrace on the other, serving up a menu of light dishes.
