The Ritz-Carlton to expand portfolio in Japan
The Ritz-Carlton, Fukuoka is set to open its doors in June 2023, marking Marriott International’s first hotel in Japan’s Kyushu region. Situated within the Fukuoka Daimyo Garden City complex in the tech hub of Tenjin, the 167-room hotel will occupy the first, third and upper floors of Garden City’s main tower.
The 147 guestrooms and 20 suites will be located on the 19th to 23rd floors, with standard rooms beginning at a minimum size of 50m². Australia-based Layan Architects & Designers will oversee the interior design of the accommodations along with the lobby lounge and bar, café, club lounge and spa.
The design programme playfully weaves in references to Hakata-ori – the yarn-dyed weaving tradition of Fukuoka – in the lighting fixtures, flooring and decorative fittings. A three-dimensional piece of wall art in the first-floor arrivals lobby, for instance, is made from thousands of pattern-dyed threads, while the carpet takes inspiration from the appearance and texture of Hakata-ori textiles. The hotel’s calm and modernist spaces will carefully weave in both the pride of local traditions as well as the lively international spirit of the historical port town.
In addition to a wedding chapel and banquet rooms, additional facilities will include a Japanese restaurant, an all-day dining venue for Western-style cuisine, a lobby lounge and bar for refreshments, and a café for afternoon tea and takeaway options.
The Ritz-Carlton, Fukuoka will mark the brand’s sixth property in Japan, and follows on from sister openings in Osaka, Tokyo, Okinawa, Kyoto and Nikko.
