The Hoxton gears up for Barcelona opening
The Hoxton will arrive in Barcelona’s El Poblenou neighbourhood next month, bringing its lobby culture, destination dining, community partnerships and location-inspired design to Spain for the first time.
The hotel is set to comprise 240 guestrooms, a rooftop with a bar, taqueria and pool overlooking Sagrada Famillia, and Four Corners – a ground-floor pizza restaurant spilling out onto a terrace, slice shop and bodega. To one side of the lobby meanwhile, three meeting and events spaces make up Hoxton signature The Apartment, along with La Cave, a basement space hosting cultural programming and community events.
Accommodations have been designed to reflect their location. Embracing the sun and sea of Barcelona, rooms feel Mediterranean with terracotta floors, faded florals and a serene colour palettes. Handcrafted tapestries hang above statement headboards, and floor-to-ceiling windows flood the spaces with light. The spaces are spread across five categories, including a brand-new ‘Homey’ category that suits families and those staying longer with kitchens and the option of two double beds. Catalan artist, Jose Antonio Roda, has illustrated room keys and collateral, while artwork is by Barcelona-based John Brown Projects. All rooms feature neighbourhood guides too, with local recommendations and bookshelves are curated by Hox Friends.
Up on the roof, Tope is a bar and taqueria with a rotating menu of tacos on house-made tortillas. Guests can enjoy frozen margaritas from the poolside slushie machine, wines on tap from local Spanish vineyards, and beers from small local breweries. A sister to Tope Portland – opened atop The Hoxton Portland in 2018 – Tope Poblenou will serve tacos featuring slow-cooked meats, charred vegetables and flavourful sauces.
On the ground floor, Four Corners follows a successful launch in London, where it ran as a four-month pop-up in Rondo La Cave and was met with rave reviews. The restaurant specialises in deep-dish Detroit-style pizza served in square pies or slices, and is overseen by New York-based pizzaiolo, Anthony Falco. Four Corners Poblenou will be open all-day everyday for eat-in and takeout, as well as room service. Alongside pizza, the menu will include small plates using local produce, salads, classic cocktails and natural wines.
Ennismore chose El Poblenou for its creative scene and local spirit, together with the draw of being in walking distance of the sights and the sea. El Poblenou, which translates in Catalan to ‘little village’, was established as a thriving district during the industrial revolution, when textile mills and factories were built there. In recent years, 22@ District urban regeneration project has seen the old factories and mills converted into artist studios, design showrooms, craft breweries, restaurants and art schools, breathing fresh life into the neighbourhood and establishing it as one of the most cultural districts that the Spanish city has to offer.
The hotel marks The Hoxton’s 11th property worldwide, following openings in London – Shoreditch, Holborn and Southwark – Paris, Amsterdam, Rome, New York, Portland, Chicago and Downtown Los Angeles.
