The House Collective launches final exhibition in its 2019 art programme
Rounding off The House Collective’s first Encounters Across Cultures art programme, The Temple House in Chengdu will showcase the Traditional Masters exhibition.
Having previously taken place at The Opposite House, The Upper House and The Middle House, Swiss artist Katja Loher collaborated with local artists to provide a unique perspective on each city using Chinese elements of wood, fire, earth, metal and water. Loher uses her signature Videosculptures to change the face of video art by freeing the medium from its rigid, rectangular platform and instead creating flowing and organic shapes.
For the final installation, The Temple House and Loher partnered with local Chinese ink painters to bring the traditional craft to life. In Chengdu, where the this art and tea are deeply rooted in modern life, locally based Wu Hao and Ma Yong were enlisted to bring a different sensibility to the installation. The exhibition features the two artists at work as Wu Hao paints symbols and creatures representing each of the Chinese elements, whilst Ma Yong leads a tea ceremony that brings all five elements together.
Encounters Across Cultures is the first of The House Collective’s initiatives to come, and Traditional Masters is available to view at the hotel until 3rd January 2020.
