Nomadic lifestyle brand Selina has launched a 31-room hotel in the heart of Brighton’s promenade, just a short walk from the British Airways i360 Viewing Tower, The Royal Pavilion and Brighton Palace Pier.
Designed by Tola Ojuolape – who collaborated closely with Selina’s workshop team, using materials that represent and embrace the community – to reflect the city’s ocean-front location and creative spirit, the property boasts sea views from each of its private rooms, suites and shared quarters, as well as from restaurant and bar, The Old Pier, which serves a range of dishes including sourdough pizzas.
“We’re thrilled to bring our unique Selina concept to one of the most exciting cities in the UK, and in such a thriving and bohemian neighbourhood full of culture, individuality and a place to cultivate hedonism and escape social restrictions,” General Manager Hugo Carvalho. “We can’t wait to open our doors and provide a new hub for the Brighton community; a fairground for daring and unadulterated fun.”
From August, 31 rooms will be available in accommodation categories such as lofts, suites, family rooms for up to four, and standard and micro-sized double rooms, with a further 19 – including a number of shared community rooms housing up to six guests – expected to open in 2021.
On the menu at The Old Pier, meanwhile, are dishes such as sourdough focaccia with whipped burrata and fermented honey, and Mexican-style cactus salad and mac’n’cheese croquettes with truffle mayo. The restaurant’s signature 48h sourdough pizzas are set to become local classics, with specials like The Poseidon, made with charcoal pizza dough, tomato base, diced chorizo, fried octopus and fresh rocket, and The Dungeon, crafted from charcoal pizza dough, vegan mozzarella, grated chilli seitan, red peppers and crushed green chillies. Over the coming months, The Old Pier will also expand the menu further to include salmon sashimi poke bowls, Bajan style fish tacos and beef and vegan burgers.
Alongside morning staples like The Pirate, made with eggs or tofu plus Pico de Gallo, queso fresco, soft corn tortillas, sliced avocado and coriander, the restaurant’s daytime offering will feature croissants stuffed with mushrooms, spinach, thyme, gruyere and béchamel, and either waffles with Dulce de leche filling, red ricotta mousse and berries or The Caribbean Waffle, made with roasted pineapple whipped ricotta, agave and almonds. Each dish can be washed down with a selection of juices, smoothies, iced teas and hot drinks, as well as classic breakfast cocktails including Bloody Marys, Bellinis and Espresso Martinis.
Elsewhere, the lobby area will become a social space for guests and locals alike, featuring a grab-and-go coffee shop for a morning pick-me-up, together with a retail space selling products from local brands. A co-working space will also be launched for the community to use as a hub, with artwork created and curated by local artist Amy Isles Freeman, whose work themes around female sexuality, freedom and joy.
Selina will be hosting curated programming, workshops and pop-ups throughout the year at its Brighton property too, all of which will be held in-line with the UK’s new social distancing guidelines.
