Rosewood to open on UNESCO site

Rosewood Hotels & Resorts has announced the 2017 opening of Rosewood Puebla, its fourth property in Mexico and first in the UNESCO World Heritage site of Puebla.

Situated 75 miles to the southeast of Mexico City, Puebla is renowned for its colonial architecture, traditional cuisine and colourful ceramics. The hotel will be in a prime position near the city’s main square, the Zocalo, which acts as the city’s cultural, religious and political centre.

Rosewood Puebla will be housed in a collection of buildings from different eras surrounding a walled courtyard. The hotel will offer 78 guestrooms and suites, a restaurant with outdoor courtyard seating, the Lavaderos de Almoloya bar and a Sense spa with four private treatment rooms.

A rooftop bar and swimming pool will also feature, offering views over the neighbouring Igelsia de San Francisco, whilst within the courtyard stands a 300-year-old chapel, available for use as a wedding venue.

“Rosewood Puebla will be a wonderful complement to our existing Mexican properties,” says Sonia Cheng, CEO, Rosewood Hotel Group. “Puebla is a living canvas and offers rich cultural, culinary and historic traditions in which guests will be able to immerse themselves.”

Designed by Wimberly Interiors, the scheme will draw inspiration from the surrounding city and its architectural styles, which range from Renaissance to Mexican Baroque. Wherever possible, traditional materials and methods of construction will be incorporated into the building.

Throughout the property, Wimberly’s scheme will highlight the city’s famed Talavera pottery, from its classic beginnings to its modern interpretations, as well as showcase furnishings and art from by locals in a sophisticated blend of traditional and contemporary.

Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987, downtown Puebla is home to over 2,600 noted historic elements and over 265 churches. It also lies close to two of Mexico’s most significant archaeological sites at Cantona and Cholula, the latter of which boasts the world’s largest pyramid.

The announcement follows a management agreement signed with Plus Arrendamientos Inmobiliarios (PAI).

“Puebla is a colourful, vibrant city that has much to offer visitors,” explains Jacobo, Jorge and Mariano Martinez Ramos, co-founders of PAI. “Under the management of Rosewood Hotels & Resorts, guests at Rosewood Puebla will enjoy an authentic and memorable experience anchored in the proud traditions and accomplishments of Mexico.”
