ReardonSmith oversee 30 Grosvenor Sq.
Architectural specialists, ReardonSmith are set to take on the role of Executive Architect and oversee plans for a new mixed-use development at 30 Grosvenor Square in Mayfair, the former home of the US Embassy in London.
ReardonSmith is acting for Qatari Diar, the owners of the 30 Grosvenor Square development. Through an advisory role, ReardonSmith will help facilitate the conversion of the building into a world-class luxury hotel. As internationally recognised hotel architectural specialists, the practice is working in collaboration with Lead Architect, David Chipperfield Architects, providing a range of expert advice and, eventually, will take on the role of Executive Architect to oversee the successful implementation of the project on-site.
Reimagined by architect Eero Saarinen, the design retains the unique external facade, while putting forward a mixed-use development to include a hotel, retail and event space.
The development will include 137 guestrooms, five restaurants, six flagship retail units, a spa and a 1000-capacity ballroom, along with significant public realm improvements.
Lucy Musgrave, Founding Director of the consultancy Publica comments: “This proposal presents a unique opportunity to create a vibrant and dramatically transformed public realm in this part of Mayfair. The project will provide much improved connections to the retail offers in Mount Street and North Audley Street and beyond.”
Sir David Chipperfield adds: “Our design proposals protect and respect the significant architectural and structural characteristics of Eero Saarinen’s design, with a focus on restoring and enhancing this unique building to secure it long term future at the heart of Mayfair. We have studied the buildings design and its history as well as its surroundings to deliver an architecturally and socially coherent proposal, which will transform this purpose-built embassy into a world-class hotel.”
