New Inya Wing at Sedona Hotel
Set to open in late 2015, a five-star Inya Wing has been added to the Sedona Hotel Yangon, in Myanmar.
With architecture by Singapore-based Forum Architects and interiors designed by Studio HBA, the new addition features 431 guestrooms and suites along with a grand lobby and high-end retail gallery, which will connect the new tower to the existing hotel. The tower also houses a new state-of-the-art fitness centre, an all-day restaurant, a luxury spa and executive lounge with services and amenities suited for the hotel’s business and leisure guests.
As one of Yangon’s five-star hotels, Sedona Hotel Yangon sits on eight acres of landscaped gardens with water features and views of the Shwedagon Pagoda and Inya Lake, from which the tower takes its name. The hotel currently offers 366 newly upgraded guestrooms and suites along with several dining options, executive clubrooms and a fitness centre with swimming pool, sauna and steam bath.
The Inya Wing rises 29 storeys from the ground offering unimpeded views of Inya Lake, the Shwedagon Pagoda, and the city. The structure rises upwards in three interfacing blocks with staggered windows at each level that are accentuated by portal fins outlining each block. This modern design allows for ample lighting throughout the tower’s interiors.
A three-storey connector between the new tower and the hotel creates a retail arcade and an elevated podium that houses the swimming pool, fitness centre and restaurant. Landscaping has been installed on the decks of the elevated podium, serving a dual purpose of connecting guests to nature while naturally cooling the interior of the hotel connector incorporating sustainability into the hotel’s ethos.
Designed by Studio HBA, the interior draws its inspiration from traditional Burmese culture and art, which are infused with a modern, Asian aesthetic.
Upon entering the lobby, the feature colours are highlighted: gold from Buddhist influences and red from the indigenous lacquerware. The traditional Burmese umbrella is a key motif that runs throughout the new wing, starting with the magnificent lighting centerpiece in the main lobby and the fritted glass ceiling, as well as the form of the lacquered rice-offering bowl.
The guestrooms are modern and feature warm, indigenous accents, such as bedside wall lamps shaped as Burmese umbrellas. These statement lamps are mounted on a dark wood slatted headboard, reflective of traditional Burmese homes, above lacquered bedside tables. A custom-designed rug, which adds a vibrant splash of color and pattern, offsets dark wood floors. The study area features an elegant wall lamp in the form of a traditional rice storage bowl lid that is suspended over the oval-shaped desk and indigenous art is displayed above the mini-bar. In addition, the guest bathrooms are designed with a glass viewing panel to allow views between the two rooms, creating a more spacious feel.
