Moxy granted consent for Spinningfields hotel
Moxy Hotels has been granted planning consent for a new 145-key hotel in Manchester’s Spinningfields district, designed by architecture and interiors studio ICA.
Nestled in a mix of contemporary developments and heritage structures, the newbuild tower will be set behind a decorative façade that marks the only surviving original feature of the historic Invicta House.
Since its construction in the 18th century, the house has been home to a variety of significant local businesses including a soda water factory, a manufacturing chemist, a hat works and, most notably, a silk finishing factory.
The design of the hotel both contrasts and complements this façade, and is clad in weathered metal rainscreen panels that recall the punch cards of a Jacquard loom in an echo to the site’s textile history.
Proposed public spaces on the ground floor offer views of surrounding streets and will seek to bring added vibrancy and life to the popular Scott Place Lane. Moxy’s ‘a boutique hotel with the social heart of a youth hostel’ ethos further offers the potential for a lively new destination within a unique building, enhancing an already architecturally diverse area in Manchester’s city centre.
Nicholas Roberts. the hotel’s architect, comments: “The project represented a real opportunity to create something which celebrates the history of Spinningfields, from the subtle reference of the jacquard loom punch cards on the façade, to the local narrative revealed within the interior design. The hotel will be rooted in the history of the area and will hopefully become a vibrant part of Spinningfields future”
