Morphosis renovates luxury guestrooms
Morphosis, the architecture firm founded by Pritzker Prize-winner Thom Mayne, has designed a series of luxury guestrooms as part of the 7123 complex in Vals, Switzerland.
Dubbed The House of Architects at 7132 Hotel, the project further includes guestrooms designed by Tadao Ando, Kengo Kuma and Peter Zumthor. The complex comprises a 130-key hotel alongside Zumthor’s landmark Therme Vals spa.
Morphosis has refurbished 20 guestrooms within the existing hotel, each measuring just 20m². Heavily inspired by the surrounding Valser Valley landscape, the firm has wrapped the spaces in locally sourced natural materials including different veins of the Valser stone and oak from the nearby Graubünden forests.
At the heart of each guestroom is a double-curved, hot-bent shower piece – an abstract, sculptural object designed by Morphosis and fabricated by Cricursa in Barcelona that contrasts the natural aspect of the space. Every element of the guestrooms have been custom designed and created.
In 2015, Morphosis was also selected to design a new luxury hotel as part of the complex. The proposed development will feature a transparent 1,250ft tower blending with the mountain landscape; 107 guestrooms with panoramic views; a podium linking the building with neighbouring structures; a cantilever containing a restaurant, café, spar, and bar; and public amenities shared with the town.
