Marram arrives in Montauk, New York
Luxury boutique surf resort Marram has opened its doors on the coast of Montauk in New York. Owned and designed by Bridgeton, the 96-key property features an open lobby, café, outdoor pool and retail space.
Named after the wild grass that grows on the sand dunes surrounding the hotel, Marram looks to nature for its design inspiration and incorporates a soft, light colour palette that evokes grey morning mist and vast dunes. Wild greenery at the entrance guides guests through the property, whilst wall-to-wall sliding glass doors blend outside and in.
The lobby’s unfinished and uninsulated white oak walls leave the vertical framing exposed, adding raw warmth, while around the grounds, secluded pathways carved throughout the hotel’s landscaping connect the different rooms and spaces.
Channelling the charm of a seaside surf cottage, guestrooms are bright and designed in muted tones with exposed white, wooden beams, handwoven rugs by In Residence, as well as hand-textured plaster walls, bedside tables and stools made from Suar wood reclaimed from old homes and boats. Displayed on the walls are a selection of works by surf photographer Brian Brielmann and minimalist line-work from Rhode Island-based musician and artist Sean Spellman, capturing the essence of the Montauk.
Meanwhile in the bathrooms, grey-toned marble countertops and exposed shower piping allude to oceanside outdoor showers. Beachfront rooms feature private balconies overlooking the water, while courtyard rooms and dune category rooms, some of which also have balconies, provide quick access to the pool and ocean.
The hotel’s on-site café Mostrador Marram takes cues from Latin American counters, accented by oceanside grilling in a cosy yet communal atmosphere. Headed by Fernando Trocca – who previously worked at Mostrador Santa Teresita – and Martín Pittaluga of Parador La Huella, the menu will offer Southern American summer cuisine. Every weekend, the café seeks to bring together community with Paella and Asado night.
Marram’s seafront location places it in close proximity with the heart of Montauk, home to a range of local restaurants, fishing and surf shops, as well as the Shadmoor and Montauk Point state parks. The hotel’s focus on wellness also sees an extensive programme of yoga, meditation, surfing classes and bi-weekly walks through nature available to guests.
