Locke de Santa Joana

Locke lands in Portugal with historic restored convent

Aparthotel brand Locke has opened its latest property, debuting in Lisbon with a transformed 17th-century convent.

Locke de Santa Joana is the group’s biggest hotel to date, comprising 370 apartments, hotel rooms, suites and penthouses across nine floors.

Social spaces include a co-working space, event and meeting spaces, a museum and a courtyard pool with a sun terrace, as well as a whole host of F&B outlets in partnership with White Rabbit Projects and Spiritland.

The property’s design is courtesy of Lázaro Rosa-Violán and Post Company, who led the transformation of the historic site. Carefully integrating old with new, the narrative within public areas, overseen by Lázaro Rosa-Violán, draws upon the convent and auxiliary spaces to retell the story of the site’s layered history to a modern audience.

Guestrooms by Post Company combine historic architectural fragments with contemporary comforts in natural tones and tactile materials. The use of local fabrics, ceramics and stone finishes – all quintessentially Portuguese materials – is offset against contemporary lighting, bespoke furniture design and fully-equipped kitchens.

Locke de Santa Joana’s F&B offer features multiple on-site venues, including bars and restaurants serving fresh local produce. The first phase of the launch will see the opening of Santa Marta, a 60-cover all-day dining restaurant inspired by the diverse flavours of the southern Mediterranean. Café Castro’s is the hotel’s relaxed cafe and co-working space, located at its entrance with seating that spills out onto the street.

The second phase of opening, set for autumn 2024, will see the introduction of several new bars, including Spiritland, a subterranean music-led space; The Kissaten, a bar with Lisbon’s largest whisky collection; and O Pequeno, an intimate champagne and martini bar, all designed and curated by London-based Spiritland.
