Kerzner reopens Dubai’s Bab Al Shams

Kerzner International has reopened Dubai’s Bab Al Shams desert resort following an extensive renovation. Redesigned by LW, the property will be added to Rare Finds – Kerzner’s collection of heritage properties.

Spread across 16 two-storey buildings, the 115-room resort is the longest running desert escape in the UAE, having been launched in 2004. Arabic for “Gateway to the Sun”, Bab Al Shams has been designed as a narration of Middle Eastern culture – infused with earthy, neutral tones that reflect its surroundings and architecture inspired by a traditional Arabian fort.

Across the site, design details draw on the location’s beauty and culture. Past and present come together at Al Hadheerah, a dining and live entertainment experience which includes an authentic souk. Anwā Sunset Lounge, the second of four F&B experiences on the site, offers panoramic views of the desert as guests dine under the stars. Indoors, eatery Zala – meaning “canopy” – transports diners to a contemporary Ottoman and Greek-inspired space, while cigar and speakeasy-style lounge Ya Hala is reminiscent of an authentic, old-world club.

“Every property that Kerzner develops is rooted in a deep connection to its local culture, community and nature, and the beloved Bab Al Shams embodies this philosophy like no other destination,” says Philippe Zuber, CEO of Kerzner International. “Through this regeneration as our first Rare Finds property, we have worked to honour Bab Al Shams’ heritage and special place in Dubai.”

Despite its renovation, some key features of the original site remain. At the heart of the resort, the desert infinity pool makes a return, alongside plush sun loungers, private cabanas and a pool bar. New additions to the site include the Desert Spa and outdoor event spaces that can host up to 500 guests.

Kerzner, which marks its 30th anniversary this year, is set to open six new properties across its four brands in 2023. After the reveal of Atlantis The Royal last month and the reopening of Bab Al Shams, the group will welcome guests to its first two European One&Only properties this summer – One&Only Aesthesis in Athens and One&Only Kéa Island in Greece.

Zuber continues: “2023 marks 30 years of Kerzner International, and we look forward to a momentous year in which we celebrate an incredible legacy while looking ahead to significant future growth in collaboration with our teams, partner-owners and world-leading brands.”
