JW Marriott opens Kaafu Atoll Island Resort
JW Marriott has announced the opening of JW Marriott Kaafu Atoll Island Resort, the second outpost of the brand in the Maldives.
Nestled in Kaafu Atoll’s largest lagoon, the resort comprises 80 private pool villas, including 47 overwater villas.
Envisioned by Turkey-based Atolye4N – helmed by lead designer Cuneyt Bukulmez – the resort’s villa design fuses local Maldivian touches and traditional island aesthetics with sleek, modern elements that draw inspiration from the island.
The arrival jetty, inspired by the graceful flight of the Maakana heron, sets the tone for the resort’s design. The villas echo traditional Maldivian ‘Gedhoru’ huts, with kajan roofs and vibrant turquoise doors, complemented by a calming palette of neutral tones, while thoughtful nods to Maldivian lacquerware crafts and contrasting elements are seamlessly woven throughout. Crafted with natural materials such as timber and stone, the resort pays homage to the raw beauty of the island.
A deep connection with nature has also been created, with the design team seamlessly blending indoor and outdoor living through floor-to-ceiling glass doors, open-air showers and private pools.
Embodying its commitment to environmental stewardship, the resort is part of a collaboration with Invena. Motivated by shifting tides and global warming challenges faced by island nations, the initiative introduces a 30m-long underwater coastal structure, designed in collaboration with the Self-Assembly Lab, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, to attenuate wave action and combat beach erosion. The installation will also foster vibrant marine ecosystems by creating a reef habitat that attracts diverse fish and coral.
The resort’s seven dining venues and bars explore flavours from around the world, ranging from an infinity pool bar and patisserie, to a signature steakhouse and fine dining restaurant.
A number of wellness facilities are also on offer, including an overwater spa, fitness centre and lap pool.
