Inside Monument Hotel Athens
Monument Hotel Athens opened its doors in April 2023, tucked away in the district of Psyrri in the shadow of the Acropolis. The hotel is housed in a listed neoclassical mansion, comprising only nine bedrooms and designed to feel like a private residence.
The historic Greek structure was originally built in 1881 by German architect Ernst Ziller. Now, owner Grigoris Tolkas and local architecture studio MPlusM have gently restored the building into a contemporary hotel.
A delicate restoration process has seen original features like frescoes, gypsum decorative details, carved marble balconies and a grand winding staircase maintained. In turn, new chic interiors have been added in, complementing the history of the property and embodying Athenian glamour.
Each of the nine bedrooms at Monument Hotel Athens has been individually designed, characterised by intricate ceiling murals, soft limewashed walls, bespoke architectural details, handcrafted beds and furnishings from Scandinavian designers including Gubi and Woud. Guestroom options range from double rooms to suites – such as Muse, which boasts a veranda overlooking Agios Dimitrios Church, and Nidus, with its sweeping terrace and private rooftop jacuzzi with views of the Acropolis.
Hidden in the heart of the hotel is a wellness centre on the lower ground floor, comprising a treatment room, sauna and hammam. Minimalist in design, the spaces provide a tranquil escape from the bustle of the city that lies above.
