Hyatt continues African expansion plans

Tanzania based Park Hyatt Zanzibar and Hyatt Regency Arusha will join the existing Hyatt Regency Dar es Salaam in East Africa. Park Hyatt Zanzibar will offer 72 luxurious guestrooms, and will be located on an UNESCO heritage site in the historic part of the city known as Stone Town. The hotel will have unrestricted and direct access to the beachfront for leisure travellers looking to enjoy Africa’s coastline. The hotel is expected to be completed in time for Tanzania’s Revolution Day in January 2014.

Expected to open in 2016, Hyatt Regency Arusha will be a 144-room hotel occupying a 29 acre-site in central Arusha, a city in northern Tanzania. Located in the heart of Arusha, the hotel will be in close proximity to some of Africa’s most famous natural landscapes and national parks, including Tarangire National Park and Mount Kilimanjaro, making it an ideal choice for both leisure and business visitors to the region.

Peter Norman, Senior Vice President, real estate and development for Hyatt in Europe, Africa and the Middle East, comments: “We are thrilled to work with ASB Holding Limited to expand Hyatt’s presence in Tanzania, one of the premier tourism destinations in Africa. We are confident that the company’s experience of developing world-class hotels will help us drive preference for the Hyatt brand in Tanzania.

“Tanzania has seen strong growth in the number of business and leisure tourists – the number of international visitors grew by almost a quarter to surpass one million in 2012, driving demand for hotels in the country. By building a presence throughout Tanzania, a key gateway city and one of the country’s most beautiful areas, Hyatt is able to offer more choices to guests as they travel within the region.”

Expected to open in 2016, Hyatt Dakar in Senegal will offer 140 guestrooms, and will feature two restaurants, a guest lounge and bar, as well as meeting space and a spa. The hotel will be located in the heart of the city’s business district, within walking distance of major international organizations in the city, such as UNICEF and UNESCO. Additionally, the hotel will border the popular Kermel market, originally built in 1860 and famed for its striking original architecture.

Norman says: “We are delighted to work with Lacoste & Cie S.A. on Hyatt Dakar, our first hotel in Senegal. The company has a depth of expertise that matches Hyatt’s ambition to provide an exemplary guest experience.”

There are currently six Hyatt-branded hotels in Africa.
