Hotel St. George set for Helsinki
Design Hotels is set to open Hotel St. George in Helsinki in Q1 of 2018. The hotel will be housed in the city’s former Literature Society and printing house for the first Finnish national newspaper.
Originally designed by native architect Onni Tarjanne, known for his work on the Finnish National Theatre, the building at Yrjönkatu 13 spans seven floors and is being restored with thoughtfully curated furniture and art, handpicked by creative director and Design Hotels original Mirkku Kullberg.
The property will feature 148 rooms and five suites, as well as wine and poetry rooms, a winter garden, and a street level lobby comprising artwork by Ai Wei Wei. Offering a mix of Finnish and Turkish culture, the hotel’s restaurant Andrea will be headed by duo Mehmet Gürs and Antto Melasniemi, while the St. George Bakery & Bar will play host to a deli and coffee shop.
Complementing the F&B offering, Hotel St.George introduces an integrated wellness concept known as Care, as well as The Playground: An intimate gym encompassing stress-alleviating exercises and collaborations with Hinsta Performance, a multidisciplinary philosophy practiced by athletes.
Located in central Helsinki on Vanha Kirkkopuisto’s Church Park, the area is also home to the city’s second oldest church that dates back to 1826. Surrounded by art galleries, boutiques, restaurants, bars, and cafes, the square is billed as the cosmopolitan hub of the city.
