Hotel Indigo lands in Durham

InterContinental Hotels Group has announced the opening of Hotel Indigo Durham, an 83-key boutique property occupying the grade-II listed Old Shire Hall.

The building itself was previously used by Durham University, and acted as an administrative headquarters and the office of its Vice Chancellor until 2012. Inside, the property takes its design hues from the surrounding neighbourhood, reflecting rich ties to the city’s cathedral, castle and university. Three distinct guestroom types include academia and cathedral-inspired aesthetics, and feature tapestry detailing, contrasts of timber and stone and soft fabrics, as well as doshes of the university’s purple colours.

Elsewhere, F&B venues consist of resident café Tinderbox Espresso and craft beer destination Rotunda Bar, while Marco Pierre White Steakhouse offers English and French classics along with signature steaks and cocktails.

“Durham is one of the UK’s most beautiful cities with a rich history and diverse culture,” comments General Manager Paul Borg. “Hotel Indigo Durham embraces the city’s character through the hotel’s creative design and we look forward to welcoming local and international guests alike to explore the neighbourhoods of Durham.”

A stone’s throw from the city’s cathedral and castle – which together make up a UNESCO World Heritage Site – the hotel is within walking distance from Durham University and train station.

Tom Rowntree, Vice President of Brand Management – Luxury and Boutique brands, IHG, Europe, adds: “We want to ensure each city is reflected through the design of every Hotel Indigo property, making each one completely unique. We are pleased that new and existing fans of Hotel Indigo are now able to explore one of the UK’s most historic and iconic cities with the arrival of Hotel Indigo Durham.”

The Hotel Indigo brand is set to increase its footprint in 2018, with upcoming projects including Hotel Indigo London – 1 Leicester Square, Hotel Indigo London – Aldgate, Hotel Indigo Milan – Corso Monforte and Hotel Indigo Stratford-upon-Avon.

The brand currently operates 24 properties across Europe, with a view to open 20 more over the next five years, including the doubling of its 11-strong portfolio in the UK. Hotel Indigo Durham is managed by Interstate Europe, a third-party hotel management company, which has 72 properties across the UK.
