Haymarket set for spring opening
Scandic, which operates 230 hotels in eight countries around Europe, is set to continue its expansion in Sweden with the imminent opening of Haymarket.
Located in Stockholm’s Norrmalm neighbourhood, the hotel’s name stems from the site’s former purpose as a market place in the late 1600s. Set to open in the spring of 2016, the hotel will fuse and restore the building’s historic art deco details with modern design and an international atmosphere.
“Haymarket is our most exciting project to date,” says Lars Sandberg, General Manager of Haymarket. “The hotel, which is already breaking barriers in terms of how a Scandic hotel is expected to look, will have an international feel and cater to a range of different demographics. The people, the food, the interiors and the atmosphere will inspire”
Haymarket – which aims to become a destination of constant movement and inspiration for Stockholm residents and international travellers alike – will offer 405 guestrooms, 16 suites, one restaurant, a smaller extended café, a cosmopolitan bar, an event floor for up to 800 people, an intimate cinema and a unique rooftop event space. Imbued with the spirit of the city and steeped in the history of the former PUB department store building, the hotel aims to be a hub for social meetings and events in Stockholm’s city centre.
At the helm of the hotel’s design strategy is Stockholm-based architecture and interior design company Koncept. The design team has chosen to restore original art deco details including patterned floors, curved stairway rails and the entrance’s gallery-like character. These historical design elements contrast the modern custom-designed pieces from Koncept and Scandinavian furniture from designers such as Sika Design, &Tradition, Rubn and Gubi.
Each guestroom is infused with a chic 1920s ambience with features such as marble countertops, velvet couches along with modern details such as rose gold faucets and custom-designed patterned wallpaper and textiles. Of the 405 rooms and sixteen suites, one exclusive suite with attached rooftop terrace will be available as an event space catering to both private and business events.
Haymarket’s restaurant, extended café and bar will not only offer breakfast, lunch and dinner for travellers and overnight guests, but the hotel will also serve as a food destination for Stockholm residents. The hotel’s main restaurant, Paul’s, will become a go-to classic with surprises around every corner. At Gretas, the hotel’s extended café named after PUB’s own Greta Garbo – who started her career as a sales clerk in the hat department and went on to become one of Sweden’s most famous exports to Hollywood – guests can hang all day in a relaxed atmosphere with a menu focused on eco-friendly produce ranging from in-house bakery bread to oysters. And for those looking to experience what Stockholm has to offer at night, Americain will mix cocktails with a chic and cosmopolitan ambience.
Inspired by the building’s rich history yet contemporary in its style, Haymarket is a union of the old and new Stockholm; A new modern classic where the pulse of the city blends with a vibrant atmosphere, bustling events, chic accommodations and an exciting culinary scene.
