Hästens to launch hotel centred around sleep
Opening in April 2021 in the quaint Portuguese city of Coimbra, Hästens Sleep Spa is a hotel concept entirely dedicated to providing a world-class night’s sleep. The property will mark the first partnership between Swedish bed maker Hästens, which boasts 168 years of experience in the field, and O Valor do Tempo.
Amongst the hotel’s unique features is Bed Talks, which gives guests the chance to learn from to sleep expert Dr. Edie Perry, who will provide a consultation to discuss sleeping positions and tips, as well as the correct bedding required for their upcoming stay. In addition, an impressive pillow menu includes soft high, medium high, firm high, medium extra high and firm extra high options, with each made from 100% cotton and filled with goose feathers and down. One of the main advantages of a Hästens pillow is its ability to provide proper support for the neck and spine, helping users to breathe better and ultimately achieve to a better night’s rest.
“We have created a completely new type of experience here at Hästens Sleep Spa. During their stay, our guests will have the opportunity to experience the absolute need for a good night’s sleep, through the Hästens’ exclusive beds and the unique environment in which they are presented,” says Tiago Quaresma, Board Member at O Valor do Tempo (the Value of Time). “They will learn and understand how sleep contributes to their well-being, and our goal is to offer guests the world’s best sleep experience.”
Hästens Sleep Spa’s proximity to the UNESCO-listed Biblioteca Joanina library – which features thousands of books and gold-adorned baroque furnishings – is the main inspiration for the interiors. As such, the 15 rooms are adorned with 1,200 hand-carved and gold-plated marble book spines, which took four months and 18 people to create, and have been engraved with titles from both Portuguese and international authors.
Taking cues from the literary richness of the Joanine Library meanwhile, the lobby is an inspiring gallery area lined with 419,992 small mosaic tiles arranged geometrically across the floor and walls. The tiles extend up to the ceiling in an ode to the bookshelves, while ornaments serve as another tribute to the nearby landmark.
“With Hästens Sleep Spa, we want to make people around the world feel how important it is to let the body get really good sleep, through good conditions and the right means,” says Jan Ryde, Executive Chairman and fifth-generation Owner of Hästens. “Our sleep expertise is unique and we want to be able to offer everyone to experience the rarity of our beds. That is what makes this hotel concept so fantastic, and we hope that more and more people will be able to take part in it in the coming years with the hope of additional hotels.”
The hotel will also serve complementary breakfast and afternoon tea, while light meals will be available throughout the day for guests that wish to dine on-site, and an exclusive rooftop will offer views of the city.
