Habitas lodge in Namibia, Africa

Habitas opens first lodge in Africa

Experience-led hospitality group Habitas has announced the opening of its first hotel outside of the Americas. Set within 50,000-hectares of private land formerly used as a hunting lodge – which is now being rehabilitated as a wildlife reserve – Habitas Namibia draws inspiration from the world’s oldest desert and its indigenous tribes. The lodge will be tied to the local wildlife, nature and culture, though its social architecture and DNA will remain consistent with the brand’s flagship in Tulum.

With sustainability at its core, the hotel’s 15 guestrooms – each a custom-built private lodge constructed with minimal impact on the surrounding environment – is developed in line with the natural terrain along the ridge of a hillside, offering views of the region’s landscape and wildlife. An existing private villa will also sleep ten guests, with interiors across both room types celebrating a sense of place through bespoke furnishings, earthen elements and traditional crafts. Elsewhere, the main lobby will overlook the lodge and feature communal gathering areas, fire pits, a swimming pool, library, spa and restaurant serving up locally sourced organic food, helmed by two-time Namibian chef-of-the-year David Thomas.

Aiming to connect people, nature and wildlife, the property’s activities programme will feature safari drives, animal tracking and walks led by local guide San Bushmen, as well as cooking and medicinal plant workshops, and talks and training on conservation with anti-poaching units. Further experiences include an outdoor cinema showing educational films, live music and dance gatherings, and wellness classes such as yoga and native meditation techniques. Habitas has also partnered with non-profit enterprise Saira Hospitality to source, train and hire staff from the local community.
