Habitas has announced the details of its newest ‘home’, set for opening in South America in August 2023. Located in Chile’s San Pedro de Atacama, the property has been envisioned as a desert refuge that combines luxury with sustainability.
Habitas Atacama is set to comprise 51 full-equipped rooms, each designed and styled with local textiles, decor and furnishings, in keeping with Habitas’ philosophy of working with local businesses. The property will be home to a restaurant and bar, which will use local and seasonal ingredients, including from its herb garden. In addition, there will be a pool and wellness area, as well as a dedicated gathering space, a trademark communal offering at each of Habitas’ homes.
Sustainability will be a high priority throughout the construction and opening of the site, the location of which boasts over 300 cloudless nights a year. In keeping with the brand’s environmentally conscious ethos, Habitas Atacama will be single-use plastic-free and run in line with a water management plan, while construction will see a careful effort made to reduce the removal of any trees, and even to plant equal amounts of trees for the wood used during any and all construction.
“Habitas Atacama will be a haven for outdoor adventure seekers craving genuine experiences in an iconic part of the world,” says Oliver Ripley, Habitas co-founder and CEO. “There is no place on earth quite like the Atacama desert, the driest non-polar desert in the world, it’s an incredibly serene and humbling place, which will be a draw for those seeking fully immersive adventure and authentic discovery. There’s something levelling about being surrounded by such natural beauty, whether it’s paragliding above the dunes during the day or being engulfed in the stars at night, we cannot wait to share this exquisite destination with guests.”
Habitas’ impact initiatives will continue to promote social and environmental sustainability within local communities by supporting conscious tourism in Chile. The brand’s impact arm, Rise, will collaborate with local partners and initiatives to give back to the community, donating into funds for every guest who stays at Atacama. Habitas Rise further aims to support Chilean communities by empowering locals through job opportunities and hospitality training.
Upon opening, Habitas Atacama will be the brand’s 11th ‘home’, adding to a portfolio which includes properties in Tulum, Bacalar and San Miguel in Mexico, as well as concepts in Namibia and AlUla, Saudi Arabia. In addition, the brand has further expanded into the US with Habitas-on-Hudson and Morocco with the recent launches of Caravan Agafay and Caravan Dakhla. Its next South American opening will be in Costa Rica’s Santa Teresa.
