Grupo Habita has announced that The Robey, a 69-key hotel, will occupy the renovated former offices of Perkins, Chatten & Hammond in Chicago. The 1929 Art Deco landmark will become home to the latest addition to the Design Hotels collection, and will feature a café, second floor lounge, rooftop lounge, and rooftop pool.

Taking its name from Robey Street, The Robey will be situated within the building’s unique triangular prism structure, and is set to feature the extensive use of natural wood, concrete and chrome. Each of the hotel’s minimalist light-filled rooms, as well as the lobby and roof spaces, have been transformed by Belgian design duo Nicolas Schuybroek Architects and Marc Merckx Interiors. The 12-storey building will retain its original Art Deco limestone façade, rooftop cupola and lantern.

Herringbone hardwood floors will contrast with Art Deco references in many of the guestrooms and suites, while walls of vintage chicken-wire glass will separate bathrooms and bedrooms. Furniture will range from sleek and streamlined to inviting and contemporary.

The 69 guestrooms will be set across 12 floors. Guestrooms and suites will range from 20m² to 60m² and all will feature a shower and a king-size bed, apart from the Landmark Queen Room, which will offer a queen-size bed. The Corner and Panorama Suites will also boast a sitting area and work desk. All rooms and suites will also offer views of the Wicker Park and Bucktown neighbourhoods, while The Panorama Suite will afford 180-degree views of the Chicago skyline.

Situated between Chicago’s Wicker Park and Bucktown neighbourhoods, the hotel’s ethos will follows suit with the area’s social sensibilities, incorporating Communal spaces that will showcase terrazzo, natural woods, and hues of deep red, green, white, and grey. The ground floor Café Robey will be helmed by chef Bradley Stellings, and will serve up his take on French-American cuisine.
