FIRST LOOK: The restyled Generator London updates the original flagship

Generator London is the essence of this new brand of hostels, with industrial, graphic, mod design styles and a subtle homage to the history of London and its local flavour. Shoreditch-based art collective Acrylicize, plays with bold graphics, rich patterns and British cultural icons to convey the spirit of London’s streets, weaving strands of culture within the hostel’s social and intimate spaces.

The design layers spaces, experiences and styles, while also aiming to form a cohesive interior that will invite, entertain and encourage travellers to make connections, relax, party and socialise.

Guests are greeted by a laser-cut hello on a British Navy inspired reception desk, while a custom train station board displays vital travel information. The central reception is made with reclaimed wood and brick and serves as the entry to all the areas of Generator London.

In the canary yellow chill-out room, which can also be used for screenings, zig-zagging strips of light transform the space. Meanwhile, criss-cross dynamic cove lighting is used in the chill-out lounge, complete with custom game tables. Tiered seating cork stools from Vitra and Tacchini Spin ottomans provide guests with a flexible and relaxed area.

In a raised plaid cove, guests can pull up a Tom Dixon Fluoro stool to the communal table with Castor light above, or have a more intimate conversation around one of the circular wooden tables with Moooi chairs.

Café zinc bar continues the industrial theme with tin panel ceiling and chocolate brown oak wood details, alongside denim upholstered bar stools. Leather egg chairs, Tom Dixon marble Screw tables and a Moooi black spider light add a contemporary twist to the traditional pub aesthetic, where guests can gather around Goodwives and Warrior’s hand-painted piano in the pink lounge.

In the dorm rooms, boldly coloured camouflage graphics wrap the walls and ceiling. The rooms are simple, yet functional, encouraging guests to spend time in the social areas. The Generator Premium rooms with single beds offer private en-suite bathrooms.

With Paris and Rome hostels poised to open at the end of 2014, Generators are now across Europe with a plan to go global. “London presented the tricky task of updating a fifteen year old hostel, housed in a former police station,” commented Anwar Mekhayech, Partner at DesignAgency.

“Made up of a labyrinth of rooms we were inspired to create a series of concept spaces, each with a distinct character and feel. Our goal was to accentuate Generator’s newly developed branding and design-style while paying tribute to London’s hip, mod character. Walking through the new Generator London, you become immersed in the Generator experience that now exists all over Europe.”
