First Look: Roost Cleveland, Ohio

Roost, the extended stay concept from Philadelphia-based hospitality firm Method Co., has announced the opening of Roost Cleveland. Located within the May Company building on Euclid Avenue, the property marks the first flag outside of Philadelphia for the Roost brand and the first design-led aparthotel in Cleveland.

Fusing a boutique hotel services with apartment-style living, Roost Cleveland comprises 62 loft-like accommodations, convivial public spaces and bespoke guest amenities. The development introduces the brand’s signature studio, one- and two-bedroom apartments to three floors within the May Company building, a department store built by architect Daniel Burnham that has undergone an adaptive restoration.

“We are thrilled to open Roost Cleveland in the May Company building in the heart of downtown Cleveland,” says Randall Cook, co-founder and CEO of Method Co. “The Roost units are stunning with the largest floor plans in our portfolio, oversized windows that flood the units with natural light and access to The May’s incredible amenities. There are very few downtown cities that have access to so many major cultural touchpoints in such close proximity, so we are incredibly excited for Roost to be in the middle of it all.”

Designed by Morris Adjmi Architects and Method Co.’s in-house design firm, Method Studios, the apartments feature contemporary furnishings like vintage Oushak rugs, functional custom workspaces, unique artwork from Lumas, coffee tables by Danish design house Gubi, and modern light fixtures by Original BTC. Roost Cleveland guests also have access to the brand’s custom amenities, including an in-room artisanal coffee programme with La Colombe, a cocktail kit and bike share initiative, together with to The May’s public areas – a three-storey open-air atrium, panoramic rooftop terrace, a gym, private yoga studio and a makerspace.

Acquired by Bedrock in 2017, the May Company building has anchored Cleveland’s Public Square for more than 100 years, when the department store opened in its namesake building in 1915 and where it operated until 1993. It remained primarily vacant until Bedrock commenced an extensive transformation of the property, seeking to restore its most definitive features such as the pediment clock and terracotta façade.

Andrew Leber, VP of Hospitality at Bedrock, comments: “Partnering with Roost to bring this concept to Cleveland has been an exciting opportunity to continue the momentum at The May. We look forward to welcoming guests for their short- or long-term stays, where they can experience the attention to detail, proximity to Cleveland’s culture, arts and entertainment scene, and access to the amenities at The May.”

Roost currently operates three locations in Philadelphia, in addition to the new Roost Cleveland. The brand’s expansion plans across the United States include an outpost at the Water Street development in Tampa this Spring, while another 118 furnished apartments are coming later this year within Detroit’s Book Tower.
