Habitas Santa Teresa in Costa Rica

First Look: Habitas Santa Teresa, Costa Rica

Habitas will grow deeper into Latin America in December 2023 with the launch of Habitas Santa Teresa, its first property in Costa Rica. Located on the southernmost tip of the Nicoya Peninsula, the property will be tucked into a private beachfront against a backdrop of lush jungle.

The eco-sustainable retreat will comprise rooms built from local and ethically sourced organic materials, blending seamlessly into the environment with minimal disruption. Sustainability will be a priority throughout, including the spa, agora, restaurant and pool deck. In keeping with Habitas’ strict standard of environmental consciousness, Habitas Santa Teresa will be single-use plastic-free, establish a water management plan, and even plant equal amounts of trees for the wood used during any and all construction.

The property itself is designed to embrace Santa Teresa’s laid-back surfer lifestyle. Designed to come alive through the surrounding natural elements, each of the 45 low-impact, earth-inspired rooms and 10 luxury tents will be tucked under palm trees and greenery, steps away from Santa Teresa’s white sand beaches and long-breaking waves.

Habitas’ impact initiatives will further aim to promote social and environmental sustainability within local communities, supporting conscious tourism in Santa Teresa. Guests can choose from an array of hand-selected experiences including Malpais Underwater Volcano Snorkeling, Motorcycle / ATV rides, Sunset Bonfires and Hydrofoiling (a surfing technique harnessing a swell’s energy), comprising part of the property’s immersive programming.

Wellness will further permeate every aspect of the resort, with a programme featuring daily movement and meditation to bootcamp training classes in the yoga shala, cold plunges, sauna and hot tub, a spa and treatment rooms. Off-site excursions will include exploring desolate beaches on horseback, mountain biking through the jungle, and waterfalls excursions. In addition, guests will have the opportunity to surf, paddle board, fish, dive and even surfboard shape.

In line with the brand’s commitment to local sourcing, Habitas Santa Teresa will feature a farm-to-table restaurant named Suawe, meaning ‘exquisite’ in the indigenous Bribri language and using seasonal local ingredients. Gathering spaces like a beachfront infinity pool, surf shack and bar will provide further space for guests to relax and connect.

“Habitas Santa Teresa is the perfect intersection of nature and wellness, an experience that synchronizes with the town’s laid-back surfer lifestyle and our holistic approach,” says Habitas co-founder and CEO, Oliver Ripley. “Our location will offer a quiet, idyllic backdrop for purpose-minded travelers seeking the perfect blend of adventure, relaxation and a sense of discovery. With several immersive experiences from yoga in our yoga shala to unique surfing adventures, beautiful hiking trails that lead to beautiful waterfalls, and riding horseback on beaches, Habitas Santa Teresa will offer the perfect mix between adventure and harmony.”

Habitas’ impact arm, Rise, will continue to play a prominent role, collaborating with local partners and initiatives to give back to the community by supporting cultural and environmental causes, donating into the fund for every guest who stays at Habitas Santa Teresa. Habitas Rise aims to support Santa Teresa’s communities by empowering locals through job opportunities and hospitality training.

The resort will be the brand’s first in Costa Rica, with plans to expand further inside the country with an additional two locations. The rapidly growing Habitas family includes properties in Tulum, Bacalar and San Miguel in Mexico, as well as one-of-a-kind concepts in Namibia and AlUla in Saudi Arabia. Moreover, the brand has further expanded into the US with Habitas-on-Hudson and in Morocco with the recent launches of Caravan Agafay and Caravan Dakhla, with plans for Habitas Atacama to open in September 2023.
