Aman has unveiled a first look at the newly renovated Aman New York, opening next month.
Jean-Michel Gathy was commissioned to design the country’s first urban Aman Resort, in New York’s landmark Crown Building bridging the harmonious ethos of Aman in the heart of one of the most bustling metropolises in the world.
Gathy has said that he designed the hotel with the New York lifestyle in mind – an interactive place, in an extraordinary location where East meets West. The architect-designer has referenced here his signature use of the particularly Asian characteristic of ‘layering’ of areas and lighting, whilst using western materials.
The opening of Aman New York marks a new era for hospitality and will be the culmination of a monumental transformation of the iconic Crown Building in Manhattan, a 100-year-old Beaux-Arts building that has undergone a restoration and redesign by Jean-Michel Gathy of Denniston. Situated on the corner of 57th Street and Fifth Avenue, Gathy combines the building’s original architectural splendour with Aman’s design language, reimagining urban design in order to transport guests away from the frenetic pace of the city to the inimitable tranquility of Aman.
The hotel will have 83-suites and 22 branded residences and its suites are among New York’s largest. Inspired by the airy architecture of Aman’s properties in Southeast Asia, pairs of bespoke double-pivot doors have been created to form bespoke central partitions, allowing guests to transform the atmosphere, creating a lofty open-plan layout or intimate private spaces. Every suite also offers a functioning fireplace, a first in New York City, while bathrooms are opulent and oversized with oval soaking bathtubs, marble rain showers and double vanities. Large windows offer dynamic views, and the use of organic, natural materials brings a sense of balance and harmony reminiscent of Aman resorts of the East.
A flagship Aman Spa covers three-storeys (2,300 square metres) defining an entirely new and all-encompassing approach to rejuvenation in the city. The spa offers a full spectrum of wellness-enhancing facilities, complete with a dramatic 20-metre indoor swimming pool flanked by fire pits and daybeds. For those seeking an immersive wellness experience, two vast Spa Houses comprise double treatment rooms, Banya and Hammam rooms, and private outdoor terraces with hot and cold plunge pools, daybeds and fireplaces, comparable to those of Aman’s remotest retreats.
Elsewhere, on the hotel’s 14th floor guests can enjoy exceptional spaces for socialising, guided by the pulse of the city. Restaurants include Arva, Aman’s convivial Italian restaurant, and Nama, Aman’s interpretation of Japan’s washoku dining tradition, which features a Japanese Hinoki wood counter for omakase-style fine dining, alongside a Wine Library, all linked by a verdant wraparound Garden Terrace. Featuring reflective pools and dramatic firepits, the 650-square-metre outdoor space benefits from a retracting glass roof allowing year-round access. Meanwhile, the exclusive Jazz Club offers world-class live performances, reinventing a classic New York experience and serving as a nightly gathering place. Aman New York is also home to 22 private branded residences, many with spacious outdoor terraces, including a one-of-a-kind, five-storey penthouse.
