Feix&Merlin celebrates inclusivity through design of Tribe Düsseldorf
London-based design studio Feix&Merlin recently completed the interior design of a 146-key Tribe outpost in Düsseldorf, Germany.
The project marks Feix&Merlin’s second collaboration with Accor’s Tribe, and is the brand’s second location in Germany as it continues its expansion across Europe.
Centrally located in Düsseldorf, the hotel occupies the site of the former Intercity Hotel, which underwent a comprehensive refurbishment to embody Tribe’s signature aesthetic. In addition to its accommodation offer, the property features a restaurant, multi-functional lounge and co-working space, cocktail bar, gym, and meeting and event spaces.
At the heart of the new design is Feix&Merlin’s vision of inclusivity, which guided every aspect of the hotel’s transformation. The studio’s design scheme is centred around the mathematical symbol ‘[+]’, which encapsulates the notion that “everything inside is included”. The sign serves as a global emblem of inclusivity, aligning with Tribe’s ethos as a diverse and welcoming space for all. “We have a strong affinity with the Tribe brand as for us it represents this idea of people coming together; a group of likeminded individuals, connected by shared values,” say the studio’s co-founders Julia Feix and Tarek Merlin.
The symbol is integrated throughout the hotel, influencing everything from spatial arrangement to custom-made joinery pieces. The design of the reception desk, which doubles-up as cocktail bar, also mirrors the brackets of the sign. The motif carries through to the guestrooms, where the symbol appears as a monogram pattern on the drapery fabric, overlaid with photographic artwork re-produced using a unique graphic process.
