Proper Hotels & Residences has unveiled its fourth namesake property in the heart of Los Angeles.

Nestled in the South Park neighbourhood, Downtown L.A. Proper Hotel comprises 148 guestrooms and suites, a multi-level rooftop deck featuring pools and firepits, a 24-hour fitness centre, and three culinary offerings.

The hotel has infused its contemporary style throughout the historic building it’s housed in – a former private club dating back to 1926 – which was meticulously restored by L.A.–based firm Omgivning under the direction of designer Kelly Wearstler.

Featuring an eclectic mix of Mexican modernism, Moroccan flair and French elegance, Wearstler’s creative vision blends past and present: curated vintage pieces are complemented by bespoke furnishings and statement pieces by local artists, from the ornate stained-glass windows by Judson Studios to the feature ceilings hand-painted by Abel Macias.

The guestrooms and suites are residential in feel and each tell a story of their own. Stand-outs include the building’s former basketball court reimagined as the Proper Basketball Court Suite, elevating original features like the painted court lines and double-height ceilings to create various areas within the sweeping floor plan. Elsewhere, the Proper Pool Suite uses the original 420ft² indoor swimming pool as a centrepiece for its living space, surrounded by a mosaic mural made from hand-glazed artisanal tiles by Ben Medansky.

Beyond the hotel’s guestrooms, the rooftop deck showcases panoramic views of the city and features a heated pool, various lounging areas and fire pits. The rooftop is also home to three dining spaces conceived by culinary duo Suzanne Goin and Caroline Styne: Cara Cara is a restaurant-bar serving vibrant dishes using local ingredients; Caldo Verde is a signature lobby-level eatery with a menu inspired by Portuguese and Spanish cuisine; while Dalia is an intimate lounge tucked away from the city, offering handcrafted cocktails and boutique wines.

Downtown L.A. Proper Hotel is the latest to join the brand Proper’s portfolio of luxury hotels in Santa Monica, San Francisco and Austin, all featuring distinctive designs by Kelly Wearstler and in collaboration with the cities’ most innovative culinary partners.
