Corinthia Hotels debuts in North America with Martin Brudnizki-designed The Surrey
The Surrey, A Corinthia Hotel has opened its doors on New York’s Upper East Side, marking Corinthia Hotels’ debut in North America.
Owned by Reuben Brothers, the 15-storey building features interiors by Martin Brudnizki across its public spaces, 70 guestrooms, 30 suites and 14 private residences. The design scheme embodies a residential feel throughout, with numerous touches that evoke its New York location. Additional renovations have been led by BKSK Architects, who worked to usher the building – which is celebrating its 100th anniversary – into a new era.
Guestrooms have been designed around a selection of colour schemes, from soft blue to spring green and rich terracotta. In celebration of the storied history and distinct architecture of The Surrey’s neighborhood, MBDS has sought to capture the ambiance of an Upper East Side home, with a residential layout, curated art collection, hand-crafted Murano chandeliers and generous natural light from vintage-inspired windows.
The destination comes to life within the property’s four signature suites, each inspired by the bridges of Central Park. This collection includes the Bethesda Grandeur Suite, Pine Bank Bridge Suite, Greywacke Heritage Suite and The Surrey Suite, all featuring design elements that pay homage to their namesakes. Crown moldings subtly reflect each bridge’s architectural style, while illustrations of the bridges are found within each suite’s grand armoire.
Art is central to The Surrey’s design and guest experience, with the hotel partnering with Paris-based Visto Gallery to curate a collection that embraces the city. Designed to feel like a personal ensemble, the artwork at The Surrey celebrates the hotel’s century-long tenure, with pieces created by New York‘s melting pot of artists since the 1920s. Multiple generations and nationalities hang side by side, with the works of younger artists placed beside the masters who influenced them.
Amenities across the hotel include a spa, the result of a partnership with French lifestyle brand Sisley, which includes two treatment rooms, a steam room, sauna, salt relaxation room, sensorial shower, an AMP-designed gym and a Sisley retail shop. Additionally, Casa Tua, the restaurant group created by Miky Grendene and his wife Leticia Herrera-Grendene, joins The Surrey, A Corinthia Hotel as its dedicated food and beverage partner, bringing the brand to New York for the first time.
“The Surrey, A Corinthia Hotel, has tapped leading visionaries in dining, spa, design and architecture to bring a sense of vibrancy to Manhattan’s Upper East Side,” says Pradeep Raman, Managing Director, The Surrey, A Corinthia Hotel. “We aim to be a cultural mainstay of our neighborhood and add to the dynamic and ever-evolving tapestry of fashion, creativity, and art that surrounds us.”
Simon Casson, CEO of Corinthia Hotels, adds: “We are incredibly proud to have our first opening in North America be one as meaningful as The Surrey, an address that has been lying in wait for its next chapter. We see this hotel as a love letter to New York and a beacon of the city’s creative spirit. As we embark on global growth, The Surrey is in many ways a new flagship, representative of the warm familial spirit of Corinthia that makes all guests feel perfectly at home.”
