Legendary Mayfair hotel Claridge’s has unveiled a series of new suites designed by Bryan O’Sullivan Studio.
O’Sullivan previously designed the much talked about Berkeley Bar at Claridge’s sister hotel The Berkeley, and has other upcoming projects across the Maybourne Hotel Group. The two new ‘Mayfair’ suites see the hotel’s signature Art Deco and Victorian architectural styles celebrated, yet reimagined for the modern era.
The first suite is inspired by its original scalloped fireplace in pink marble and glass, whose curves continue throughout from the curvature of a hand-painted screen to the coral mohair chairs. The colour palette consists of pinks, corals, light green and neutrals, while the furniture is a mix of locally-sourced antiques and bespoke pieces by Bryan O’Sullivan Studio, which provide an overarching contemporary feel. The suite also comprises a bur oak mini bar inspired by the lives of the Bright Young Things of the 1920s, as well as an Art Deco bur oak headboard. Elsewhere, a 1950s Murano glass pendant – sourced at an Italian auction – creates a statement in the sitting room and pulls the scheme together. Rounding out the suite is a marble bathroom, together with a vanity table nook that is decadently wrapped in deep bur oak and features a pink Italian marble table top. The vanity mirror is flanked with light bulbs evoking silver screen glamour.
Taking cues from Claridge’s Victorian architecture, the second suite is pared back and classical. Bryan O’Sullivan experimented with the furniture, fusing different eras, from the 1940s to the modern day. Again, the original Victorian fireplace is a centrepiece of the suite and is straddled by 1950s Italian-inspired bespoke wall lights. Wooden foret flooring by Osca Ono runs throughout the living areas, whilst marble floor spans the lobby and bathroom, embedded with the signature Claridge’s ‘C’. Statement pieces include a free form, marble-topped dining table and a curved sofa in chestnut mohair, as well as a curved mini bar in walnut with floral marquetry inlay and a shearling Finn Jhul Pelican chair in the bedroom, which also features a Brutalist pendant light. The walk-in dressing room meanwhile is lined in light oak with leather inlay panels, complete with a stained glass skylight. Elsewhere, the bathroom encompasses cornflower blue marble accents and a curved bath flanked by matching washstands. The piece de resistance however is the Powder Room off the lobby; a Fontana Arte Mid-century mirror is the focal point, surrounded by dark and sultry marble in greys, purples, and greens. A hand-carved timber washstand and chrome taps are the final flourishes.
