The champion of smart city travel, CityHub, has opened the doors of its first international project.

Located in the diverse neighbourhood of Vesterbro, CityHub Copenhagen is the group’s first location outside the Netherlands.

“CityHub Copenhagen is our largest location yet, and the first milestone towards international development,” asserts Pieter van Tilburg. “A city known for its pioneering design and hospitality excellence, Copenhagen is a perfect fit for the brand.”

The hotel brand is on a mission to provide Generations Y and Z with an accessible and state-of-the-art place to stay, fulfilling the gap between hotels and hostels. Guests are able to curate their stay inside and out, thanks to comfortable and optimised use of space, a digital first stance, and around-the-clock access to local savvy CityHosts. This allows them to experience smart, affordable luxury, while enjoying unforgettable and authentic city breaks.

Converted by Copenhagen based studio Spacon & X, the 215-key property replaces the traditional hotel room with a new guest-orientated design concept known as Hubs. The compact yet sleek enclosures are designed to balance a private experience and communal style of living, providing both comfortable sleeping and optimised use of storage.

Each Hub employs technology – such as mood lighting and music streaming systems using integrated bluetooth devices – to make the space customisable.

In a bid to further revolutionise traditional hotel amenities through technology, the hotel group has adopted the CityHub app and RFID wristbands to enable contactless checkin and self-service at the bar.

Meanwhile, the shared bathrooms incorporate solid and durable materials – such as silk-screened printed glass, yacht-varnished plywood, coloured concrete and solid stainless steel – to provide tactility and comfort.

Elsewhere the design team have implemented a custom-made 11m long bar built from plywood, steel and linoleum.

Currently the project offers two shared spaces; The Hangout combines a raw industrial space with custom pieces of furniture by Spacon & X and textural fabrics. Second-hand furniture and plants breathe life into the design concept. The Time-out Space seeks to bridge the gap between a slower and fast-paced traveller lifestyle by creating an atmosphere between activity and bed-time.

“The concepts and visual strengths of CityHub Copenhagen are guided by contrasts,” explains Nikoline Dyrup, founding partner of Spacon & X. “It’s a collision of mutually supporting but varied experiences, providing guests with multiple private and open living options, depending on their mood.”

The brand’s digital approach to hospitality is in line with its mission to optimise travel for the next generation, who expect a secure, inclusive and personalised experience in a central location.

“Young leisure travellers are the category most apt to travel in these uncertain times, either within the frontiers of their own country or internationally, when possible,” states Sem Schuurkes, Co-founder of CityHub.

As the travel industry is undergoing a major rethink, CityHub adds private bank NIBC joining long-standing partner ABN AMRO in supporting its development. The new funds will support and accelerate the group’s expansion plan to grow its portfolio to ten locations.
