CitizenM to open six new hotels in 2022
CitizenM has announced its expansion plans for the year ahead, taking its total number of hotels to 30 across Europe, North America and Asia.
CitizenM Miami Brickell | Q1
The brand will make its debut in Miami with two properties, starting with citizenM Miami Brickell. The 252-room hotel is set to feature facade artwork by local artist Jen Stark, whose five pieces are united to make one composition, bridging CitizenM’s playful personality with Brickell’s bustling cosmopolitan atmosphere. Inside, eight societyM meeting rooms will couple advanced tech with unlimited coffee, while in a first for CitizenM, a rooftop bar and swimming pool rounds out the offer.
CitizenM Miami World Center | Q1
CitizenM’s second new hotel in Miami will open at the Worldcenter. Surrounded by a mix of retail, hospitality and entertainment spaces, the 351-key property will feature a series of sculptures placed across the facade and created by FriendsWithYou, the Los Angeles-based art collaboration between Samuel Borkson and Arturo Sandoval III – known for their work with the likes of Pharrell Williams and Diplo. Inside, there will be four societyM meeting rooms as well as a rooftop pool and bar on the 11th floor.
CitizenM Seattle Pioneer Square | Q1
Bringing new life to one of the city’s most historic neighbourhoods, the 232-room Seattle Pioneer Square is CitizenM’s second property in Seattle following CitizenM Seattle South Lake Union, which opened in 2020. The brand’s new presence in Pioneer Square highlights an important milestone for the historic site; originally home to Seattle’s first saw mill, the corner lot will represent the district’s evolution into one of the country’s premier cultural and art destinations. True to CitizenM’s commitment to integrating art into its properties both inside and out, the operator has commissioned local artist Ryan Feddersen to create a large mosaic on the modular building’s facade.
CitizenM Washington DC NoMa | Q2
Short for North of Massachusetts Avenue, NoMa is quickly rising as one of the most popular neighbourhoods in Washington. CitizenM is joining the fast growing district with a new 292-key hotel that will become its second property in the city following CitizenM Washington DC Capitol, which opened in 2020. The property also features facade artwork by Washington-born artist Hannah Whitaker. Inside, three societyM meeting rooms are available for private hire.
CitizenM London Victoria Station | Q2
CitizenM’s fourth property in London – following CitizenM London Bankside, CitizenM London Shoreditch, and CitizenM Tower of London – is being built using the brand’s innovative modular construction method. With 226 guestrooms, the hotel is situated close to major tourist attractions such as Buckingham Palace and Tate Britain, and offers transport links within Greater London and Gatwick Airport.
CitizenM Chicago Downtown | Q4
The operator’s debut in Chicago will form part of Sterling Bay’s mixed-use development at 300 North Michigan Avenue, situated between the Riverwalk and Millennium Park. The 280-key hotel sits within a 47-storey tower that also comprises 289 residential units and 25,000ft² of retail space. Inside, CitizenM Chicago Downtown will feature an art-filled living room, 24/7 canteenM and three societyM meeting rooms. The building’s facade will feature a commissioned piece by Illinois-born, New York-based Nina Chanel Abney, whose artwork will also appear in the entrance.
Following these six new openings in 2022, 2023 will see CitizenM add seven more properties to its portfolio: including its first in Rome; fifth in Paris; fifth in London; third in Miami; second in Boston; first in Austin; and a benchmark project in California’s Menlo Park for the Facebook campus. Having already doubled its portfolio since 2018, CitizenM continues to seek new developments in gateway cities across North America and Europe.
