CitizenM debuts in Switzerland with Zurich opening
CitizenM has marked its first Switzerland-based hotel with an opening in Zurich. Housed in an iconic building erected in the 1950s – formerly made up of office and retail space – the hotel has been designed by CitizenM’s longstanding partner Concrete. Large shop windows and staircase have been retained, while the rest of the interior spaces have been refurbished to create a 160-key property with two living rooms, a check-in desk area, a canteen with bar and bakery, and several SocietyM meeting rooms.
The design, much like the rest of CitizenM’s portfolio, is modern yet respectful to the building’s heritage. Artwork by Jean-Vincent Simonet is displayed on the façade, while inside, a 360-degrees art wall work by Douglas Mandry decorates the check-in area. The signature citizenM cabinet, filled with books, collectables, inspiration and art by Thomas Raat, Barabara Visser and others, connect the public spaces and animates the interiors. Meanwhile, the living room is decorated with a custom-made communal table and a bespoke rug in the shape of a CitizenM chocolate bar – a nod to Switzerland’s renowned chocolate-making reputation.
The guestrooms have been furnished according to the standard CitizenM design concept, each featuring an XL-king-size bed with luxury duvets, a Hansgrohe rain shower and in-room art by Zurich-based photographer Claude Gasser.
