Capella makes Australia debut in Sydney

After an extensive seven-year renovation, Capella Sydney has opened its doors to mark the brand’s debut in Australia. Housed within the former Department of Education building, the property has undergone a meticulous restoration process led by Pontiac Land, with architecture by Make Architects and interiors by Bar Studio.

Originally designed in the 1900s by New South Wales (NSW) government architect George McRae, the structure forms part of the city’s prestigious Sandstone Precinct. Now, it holds 192 guestrooms and suites, arranged across nine levels.

“Pontiac Land has always been passionate about creating meaningful developments that contribute and help shape their communities,” says CEO David Tsang. “Capella Sydney was an ideal opportunity for us to sensitively repurpose this culturally significant landmark in the heart of downtown Sydney and transform it into a more public offering as a leading luxury hotel for everyone to be able to experience.

“We are grateful for the support of the NSW government, and the city of Sydney in the achievement of our shared vision for Capella Sydney’s contribution towards a vibrant and rejuvenated Circular Quay precinct.”

Upon entering the hotel, guests will find a lobby that celebrates the work of Australian artists, displaying pieces from the likes of Judy Watson, Otis Hope Carey, Elise Cakebread and Georgia Bisley. The space culminates with a large robotic lighting installation by Dutch art duo Drift. The central lounge area meanwhile, now known as Aperture, occupies the original courtyard of the old building, and is the fulcrum from which the F&B offerings are accessed: Brasserie 1930 and McRae Bar, where cuisine is created in collaboration with The Bentley Group.

The ground floor is also home to The Living Room, a relaxed space that has become a signature feature of Capella properties. Moving upwards, level six of the building is home to the hotel’s Auriga Spa, alongside a 20m heated indoor pool.

Cristiano Rinaldi, President of Capella, comments: “The opening of Capella Sydney is a milestone moment in the company’s global expansion. This launch represents a significant opportunity to showcase the brand’s refined and curated offerings to Sydney and its visitors, and we look forward to amplifying the stories, culture and experiences of the city through a uniquely Capella lens.”
