Can Bordoy opens doors in Palma Old Quarter
Can Bordoy Grand House & Garden – a member of the Preferred Hotels & Resorts L.V.X Collection – has opened its doors in Palma, Mallorca. Set in the largest private garden in central Palma, and featuring 24 suites, a heated outdoor pool, secluded rooftop, library and spa, the hotel is set behind a discrete façade in the district’s Old Quarter.
Designed by Palma de Mallorca-based architectural studio Ohlab, the hotel is the product of a four-year renovation project to breathe life back into a 16th century structure formerly home to a kindergarten of the Catholic religious order of Sagrado Corazón de Jesús. Adorned with gothic relics, marble tiling, baroque mirrors, and velvet curtains, the space has been reimagined by OHLAB’s Paloma Hernaiz and Jaime Oliver, with the designers drawing inspiration from kintsugi, the Japanese method for repairing broken ceramics with gold, silver, or platinum, with the pair working to repair the original Can Bordoy building without disguising its history and age.
Interiors meanwhile combine the building’s past with more contemporary tones. Ceiling-height curtains divide off areas within the suites, while bespoke furnishings, custom-made bars and premium light fixtures add detail. Elsewhere, Art Deco elements as well as antique pieces obtained from shops in Copenhagen, Paris, and Turkey are paired with eclectic ceramics and local trinkets.
A 750m² private garden – home to over 70 plant species as well as wild olive, Kacaranda and fruit trees – has been landscaped to serve as a backdrop to the spa and dining experiences, with heated swimming and whirlpools creating a tranquil, hidden oasis. Elements of the garden are carried within, with plants and greenery climbing across the walls and roofs of the property. The spa – surrounded by authentic stone walls from the 12th century – features exposed concrete and delicate natural finishes.
Guestroom categories include Traveller Suites, Junior Suites, Deluxe Suites, Premium Suites, and one Grand Suite. Each room is designed to have its own character while receiving natural sunlight and views of the property’s interior patios or Palma’s Old Quarter. Amenities include in-room Bluetooth sound systems, concierge and butler service, and evening turn-down.
Inspired by the private garden, Botànic is Can Bordoy’s bistro-influenced restaurant helmed by Chef Andrés Benítez, formerly of Michelin-starred restaurant Bou. Serving up food sourced locally with minimal impact on the environment, the restaurant’s Mediterranean-style cuisine is served within an 86-seat restaurant comprising indoor and outdoor seating options.
