Campbell Gray Hotels is set to open a new wellness retreat, Palácio de Canavezes, in Spring 2021.
A former palace hotel visited by the Portuguese Royal Family, the original building dates back to the early 1900s when the Canavezes region became known for its hot springs and thermal, medicinal waters. Visitors would travel to the area to sample the water’s healing and restorative properties.
The Palácio de Canavezes resort will comprise 52 guestrooms and suites overlooking the River Tâmega on the edge of the Douro Valley, a restaurant and terrace with views of the surroundings.
The spa offering includes a PureGray health clinic and wellness facility, an indoor swimming pool, sauna and steam room, while treatment rooms and a hammam are carved into the rock face onto which the resort is built. Elsewhere, landscaped gardens extend to the river’s edge and there’s jetty for water sports.
The hotel’s wellbeing philosophy will define the food and beverage offering. Taking full advantage of the rich local produce, the menu will merge classic dishes with nutrition and culinary art.
