Californian-inspired renovation completed at Casa Loma Beach Hotel
Casa Loma Beach Hotel, a 70-room property on the cliffs of Laguna Beach, has debuted the results of a $15 million renovation.
Marc & Rose Hospitality enlisted California-based architecture and interior design studio Electric Bowery, as well as graphic and branding firm Land, to reimagine what was formerly the Inn at Laguna Beach. The oceanfront property’s transformation is influenced not only by the beauty of its clifftop landscape, but by a laidback Mallorcan mindset and the vivacity of California’s coastal spirit.
In crafting the design language, Marc & Rose, Land and Electric Bowery embarked on a deep dive of Laguna Beach’s history, from the early days of Prohibition when the area’s counter-culture reputation saw it become a seaside sanctuary for creatives.
“Throughout the design process, we worked closely with Marc & Rose to create a naturally-inspired destination that celebrates Laguna’s environment and embodies a creative ethos,” says Lucia Bartholomew, Principal of Electric Bowery. “Our vision of fostering a sense of purpose and wellbeing is reflected at Casa Loma through the marriage of the local bohemian spirit with the natural energy of the sea.”
Electric Bowery, Land and Orca worked closely together to infuse each space with a bohemian energy evocative of the town’s creative roots, with design details including a towering relief sculpture bathed in sunlight, to bespoke screen-printed artwork and woven throws.
John Grossman, President of Marc & Rose, adds: “Land was enlisted to make the entire hotel one large immersive art experience – from the lobby mural, to the hand-painted canvas tapestries in select guestrooms, to the custom screen-printed and numbered framed original artworks. Every aspect of Casa Loma, including the handcrafted wooden furniture and its vintage lobby sound system, feels organic to the space and its surroundings, but precise in its placement and design.”
The 70 newly-appointed guestrooms blend a Mediterranean sensibility with the comforts and colours of the neighboring sea. The influence of the original surfboard shapers is evident at every scale of design, with custom beds, built-in desks, sofas and case goods taking sinuous forms. Lighting and banquette design meanwhile are inspired by organic shapes found in the surrounding seascape. Relaxed textiles take on an elevated feel; traditional ticking stripes in muted, natural shades adorn custom chairs in each room, set against playful checkered benches and whimsical throw blankets. 38 rooms feature private balconies or patios, many overlooking the sweeping Pacific Ocean and Main Beach below.
