Bunkhouse Mexico City Guestroom

Bunkhouse makes debut in Mexico City

Bunkhouse has opened its latest property, this time in Mexico City’s La Condesa neighbourhood. The second Bunkhouse hotel in Mexico – but the first in Mexico City – comprises 19 rooms over five floors, a lobby bar and lounge, and a rooftop terrace.

Housed in a building originally built in 1947, Hotel San Fernando has maintained many of its original architectural features, which draw on the anti-traditional elegance of the Art Deco era. Details like casement windows, encaustic tile floors, wainscoting in the corridors and lobby and stained glass have been preserved, while Bunkhouse and Mexico City-based Reurbano have revitalised the interiors to reflect Mexico’s rich colour and history.

Upon entering the building, guests may notice the hotel’s Art Deco inspiration in its doors, with curved metal panes original to the building alongside new glass that mimics stained-glass. As for the hotel’s lobby, a range of local collaborators have been brought together, with lounge chairs from Originario, and works from local artists like Pedro Friedeberg and Ricardo Guevara.

With nods to Bunkhouse’s Texas heritage, guestrooms feature clean-lined furnishings from La Metropolitana, accentuated with colour blocked walls in a punchy coral, and ivory and gold peppered throughout. Meanwhile, Bunkhouse has stained the built-in wood millwork by La Metropolitana in a warm tone, adding pops of teal and green to the exposed plywood edges. Dishware and textiles throughout the rooms are collated from the city’s various markets, with select rooms featuring a kitchenette for those in need.

Three new guestrooms find home on the roof, featuring brand-new furniture designed by Bunkhouse and brought to life by B Collective Studio, with colourful tiles in pale blue, coral and green creating geometric patterns across the space.

“CDMX has absolutely everything we love in a city, and more. The culinary scene is mind blowing, the depth of culture is remarkable, the architecture and design are stunning, and most important of all, the people are incredibly warm and welcoming,” says Amar Lalvani, Executive Chairman, Bunkhouse Group. “We’ve been searching for the right opportunity to open a hotel there for some time now, and in partnership with our friends at Reurbano, as well as countless other local creators, we couldn’t be more thrilled to expand into such a vibrant and captivating city.”

In search of a communal space in which to relax, guests can head to the lobby lounge, which is accompanied by outdoor seating. Here, stained-glass windows feature Art Deco details in bold hues of deep turquoise, emerald green, lavender and ochre, sitting alongside soft green walls and a bar clad in clay tile with a marble top.
