BHDM Design renovates Waldorf Astoria Atlanta Buckhead
Bi-coastal interior design firm BHDM Design has renovated Waldorf Astoria Atlanta Buckhead, taking cues from the natural beauty of the state. Influenced by local dogwood festivals, the design scheme – from public areas to guestrooms – melds Neoclassical details with flora-inspired motifs, all resting within an architecture that is a contemporary classic.
Starting in Peacock Alley, guests are greeted by a light and airy space set in a lobby original designed by architect Robert A. M. Stern. The BHDM team outfitted the venue with modern, gently curved sofas and chairs suitable for both lounge and dining. New, custom sconces and furnishings set the floorplan, with a bespoke hand-painted mural by Dean Barger depicting a silvery dappled forest overhead. Artwork in the space is a rotating partnership with Bill Lowe Gallery.
Through a tall, slender opening, guests can see Brassica and its intimate bar beyond. Conceived as a glowing, intimate mixology space, the brasserie is layered with Art Deco touches inspired by the original Waldorf Astoria. Custom, cerused oak walls, white oak floors and saddle leather banquettes are warmed further by bespoke pendant lights, while geometric gold-leafed Philip Jeffries wall-covered insets create an inviting backdrop.
The main dining room for Brassica carries the bar’s welcoming materials and motifs but in a lighter and brighter way. A custom, pearlised hand-painted wallcovering by Vahallan meets millwork window casings, while warm wool and cashmere drapery capitalise on the room’s height and meet the ground with a bespoke 12” fringe. Sconces by Holly Hunt and a dogwood-inspired chandelier by Yellow Goat generate a warm and dappled light experience.
Beyond Brassica is the Solarium – previously an open-air patio. Maintaining the original architecture, BHDM enclosed the space and kept the original exterior aggregate of the building exposed. Imagined to reflect its prior use, the Solarium has bespoke uplit trellises, overhead lanterns and furniture that evokes an indoor-outdoor feel. Twelve foot drapery in a velvet faux bois provides depth and luxurious texture to contrast the original exterior.
Upstairs, the nature-inspired motif continues in the guestroom experience. Corridors were updated with new paint, bespoke dogwood-inspired carpet by Jamie Stern, and new artwork from Soho Myriad. Rooms are now light and relaxing retreats, thoughtfully appointed for guests to work, lounge and dine. Custom cream-coloured sofettes are juxtaposed with dark walnut and bronze round tables, while new swing arm wall sconces with over-scaled shades were implemented to incorporate a comfortable touch of residential warmth. Windows are dressed with BHDM-designed tone-on-tone panels, developed and printed with Schumacher Hospitality in an ombre flowering branch pattern. Underfoot, the new carpet in soft, warm grey and pearl tones was inspired by a Chanel tweed. Rounding out the design, bespoke artwork throughout adds understated modernity to the rooms and was produced by local Atlanta artists.
