Barceló Hotel Group has announced a string of new openings set to debut in 2022, both within Spain and globally.

While celebrating its 90th anniversary in 2021, the Spanish hospitality group unveiled a total of 14 new properties, with the opening of its first resort in Sri Lanka marking its presence in its 22nd country.

This year, Barceló plans to roll out a further 14 openings, six of which will be reopenings following refurbishments across Spain, Mallorca and Morocco.

The group’s new properties set to open in 2022 are: Occidental Roca Negra in Gran Canaria, Occidental Ankara in Turkey, Occidental Eden Beruwala in Sri Lanka, Barceló Ljubljana in Slovenia, Barceló Funchal Oldtown in Portugal, and Barceló Malé Nasandhura and Occidental Bodufinolhu Resort in the Maldives.

A particularly significant opening for Barceló will be the Canfranc Estación, a Royal Hideaway Hotel in Huesca, northeastern Spain. Scheduled to open this winter, the project will transform Huesca’s historic train station into a 104-key five star hotel, featuring four luxury suites, a library and a wellness area with a hydrotherapy pool. The old station hall will house a grand reception area, with two disused wagons offering guests a unique dining experience in the style of classic train carriages.

Originally built in 1928, the station is an emblematic cultural hub with more than 90 years of history. After experiencing neglect in recent years, the group plans to sensitively restore the building and undertake a high-spec conversion, injecting new life into it with aspirations of putting the region on the map.

“The hotel is located in a truly one-of-a-kind building,” says Juan Manuel Gordillo, Deputy Director General of Construction and Development at Barceló, “so we are looking to respect and enhance the great history of this station through its interior design, transforming it into a 5-star luxury hotel with under the Royal Hideaway Hotels brand.”
