AutoCamp opens third US outpost
AutoCamp has opened of its third US outpost and first East Coast location with a new hotel in Massachusetts.
The hospitality brand partnered with real estate firm Whitman Peterson, as well as Boston-based developer Blue Flag Partners and its private equity investment arm, Blue Flag Capital, to assemble a team of local craftspeople, subcontractors, artisans, designers and engineers to give AutoCamp Cape Cod an authentic feel.
New York-based firm Workshop/APD was responsible for the master plan of the 14-acre site, as well as the architecture and interior design of an 8,100ft2 Clubhouse featuring a mid-century modern lounge with an indoor fireplace and cosy seating, a general store and restrooms with luxury showers. The second floor of the building also comprises a reservable private space for corporate retreats, meetings and social events.
Inspired by the modernist Cape Cod beach houses of famed designer Walter Gropius, Workshop/APD explored both the nostalgia of the region together with its natural palette. The studio also had personal space in mind and ensured that the development offered a socially distant experience where guests escape the crowds.
“At Workshop/APD, we are dedicated to creating site-specific designs with a unique connection to the local landscape and culture,” says Founding Principal Andrew Kotchen. “The plan for AutoCamp Cape Cod was ultimately to provide guests with privacy and serenity through separate airstream accommodations while offering modern, luxurious communal amenities that express the spirit and rich design history of the Cape.”
In the Clubhouse, charred and natural cedar are paired with black steel and concrete to create a modernist juxtaposition of building materials. Elevations were inspired by the natural sightlines across the property, with large expanses of glass, low slung modernist massing and strong dark horizontal metal accents combining to create a simple retreat. The Clubhouse site was selected to maximise the views of Buzzards Bay and the Atlantic Ocean, visible throughout its main level or second-floor meeting and event space.
Elsewhere across the site there’s 88 custom-designed, 31-foot Airstreams; 10 luxury tents – available April through October – five Accessible Suites and five X Suites. Airstream Suites and X Suites offer a queen-sized Tempur-Pedic bed, spa-inspired bathrooms, a sofa that converts into a bed, flat-screen television with cable, heating and A/C, a microwave, mini-fridge, cookware, BBQ accessories and a private fire pit with dining area.
The luxury tents have been built by Sheridan Tents and offer a king-sized Tempur-Pedic bed, electricity, dual fan and heater, mini-fridge, a sofa that converts into a bed and a private outdoor fire pit. The spaces have round-the-clock access to spa-inspired restrooms and showers located inside the Clubhouse, featuring towel service and Ursa Major bath products. Airstreams and X Suites are available year-round. All Airstream and tent suites feature an additional sleeping space on a futon for a third adult or two small children. AutoCamp Cape Cod is dog-friendly too, offering Pet Kits that include a blanket, food and water bowls, and treats.
Amidst the brand’s amenities are organic blankets by Coyuchi, natural bath and skincare products by Ursa Major, and interactive environmental art installations. The development also features an outdoor play area, and when safe to do so will offer on-site activities for guests such as yoga and meditation, a campfire speaker series, music programming, local F&B tastings, and farm-to-table dinners. Residents will have the chance to borrow Linus bikes to access the nearby towns of Woods Hole and Falmouth via the Shining Sea Bikeway.
As part of the company’s commitment to preserving and improving natural ecosystems, AutoCamp is restoring over 22,000ft2 of wetlands with native plants on the property. This will expand local wetland habitat, reduce water runoff into surrounding waterways, and support native pollinator plants. AutoCamp’s Dollar-A-Night-Program will also contribute one dollar for each room night booked to The 300 Committee Land Trust, a Falmouth-based non-profit land trust dedicated to preserving and protecting natural lands.
