Asbury Ocean Club Hotel slated for Summer 2019 opening
Asbury Ocean Club Hotel, a 54-key property occupying the entire fourth floor of the New Jersey coast’s Asbury Ocean Club, has announced a summer 2019 opening.
Reuniting the design team behind The Asbury Hotel, the project sees Anda Andrei – design lead for the multi-billion-dollar Asbury Park redevelopment project – again collaborating with Bonetti / Kozerski Architecture, operator David Bowd of Salt Hotels and newcomer Gary Handel of Handel Architects to create the boutique property.
“Asbury Ocean Club is not just a building; it’s the resurrection of Asbury Park,” says Jay Sugarman, CEO of developer iStar. “It is a symbol of the return of this town to its rightful glory and an opportunity for us to create the ultimate beach lifestyle for those who want the very best.”
The building itself takes the form of a long vertical plane rising from the ocean and sweeping towards the west, with glass and natural materials deployed to weave light and openness throughout Andrei and Bonetti / Kozerski’s interior scheme. Emphasising a residential feel through an understated design incorporating details like bronze doors, flora and foliage, handmade tiles and bespoke furnishing, the hotel is extended by way of a pool deck overlooking the ocean equipped with a full-service bar and grill. Handel has also added a gentle curvature to the building to reflect the shoreline.
“There’s a kind of magic to being at the beach, in any season or weather, and that’s what’s captured in every detail of the Asbury Ocean Club Hotel,” Andrei explains. “The hotel conveys a feeling you usually have to travel very far to experience – the peace and relaxation of a one-of-a-kind oasis. With that in mind, our design is focused on connecting every guest with gentle dunes and tranquil reflecting pools.”
At the heart of the property sits the Drawing Room, designed to resemble a glass house floating on a reflection pool. Functioning as a living room day and night, the space features an open kitchen doubling as a bar as well as a music room, fireplace, solid oak communal table and views of the sand-dune landscape by garden designer Madison Cox.
Andrei and the Bonetti / Kozerski Architecture team has sourced details including shelves bearing hundreds of pieces of coloured glassware and hand-painted fabrics to accentuate the spaces, as well as a limited-edition leather chair by Charles Kalpakian, vintage Ultra Fragola by Ettore Sottsass, Jasper Morrison seating, Paola Navone wicker loveseats, and custom Apparatus Studio pendant lights.
Each guestroom at the Asbury Ocean Club Hotel has been designed in the vein of a private beach loft, and are set within 11-foot ceilinged spaces in wood to match the wood-panelled floors. Each room also boasts a daybed or banquette, and balconies that extend out to optimise the view.
Among the 54 rooms, four one-bedroom suites come equipped with kitchens, two full baths and a dining area, with natural light spilling into a large, open living room and expansive terraces. Seven studio lofts are larger than the standard and executive rooms and include sofa beds, whilst many lofts have corner seating banquettes that serve as a working and dining surface.
The hotel’s F&B programme will feature a Mediterranean-inspired all-day menu served in the Drawing Room, whilst the ground floor will host a fine dining restaurant as well as 22,000ft² of retail space, set to debut in 2020.
