1898 The Post opens in Ghent post office building
1898 The Post has opened in the Belgian city of Ghent. A boutique property comprising 38 guestrooms and suites, the hotel is located in the upper floors of Ghent’s historic post office building and marks the third to be incorporated in to the Zannier Hotels portfolio following Le Chalet by Zannier in Megeve, France and Phum Baitang in Siem Reap, Cambodia.
Built between 1898 and 1910, Ghent’s post office building was designed by architect Louis Cloquet in collaboration with Stéphane Mortier for the 1913 World exhibition.
The building is eclectic in style, with predominantly Neo-Gothic and Neo-Renaissance influences, echoing the façade of the Gildehuis der Vrije Schippers series of guild houses along the Graslei Canal. The last service counter in the post office closed in 2001.
All guestrooms are decorated in a warm style with high ceilings, dark green walls and antique furniture that complements the building’s late 19th century architecture. The natural, earthy colours used throughout the scheme combine to create a local sense of place, and offers guests the relaxed feeling of being at home.
Elsewhere, The Kitchen, the property’s dining venue, features an open fireplace and serves up an American buffet-style breakfast, a selection of fresh and seasonal light dishes for lunch and afternoon tea with home baked pastries.
Atmospheric cocktail bar The Cobbler, meanwhile, boasts views across the spires of Ghent and an innovative and extensive drinks menu alongside tapas-style dishes. A multi-functional room suited for both business and leisure gatherings is also available for both guests and non-guests.
1898 The Post is located in the heart of Ghent, facing the Graslei Canal and within close proximity to numerous prime attractions. The Cathedrals of St. Bavo and Gravensteen are just a 5 minute walk from the hotel, whilst an array of restaurants and cafes are located on the hotel’s doorstep.
